Time for a stool!

There was a time, about 8 years ago, when I was quite ill (nausea and dizziness was a side-effect of the treatment) and I was playing a fair bit both in town and out of town. I purchased a QuikLok DX-749 and it worked really well. I still have it and use it from time to time. But back then it got a lot of use.

One of the great things about it is that you can use it as a "sit-standing" stool. Photos of the bands looked like I was just kinda half-sitting, even though I was firmly planted on that seat. It's very comfortable. Unfortunately it's a bit heavy, but I was already using a cart for my rig and I made it fit.

I use one of these:

Jack Bruce is the FIRST thing I thought of, but he gets a pass because he was an OG at the time he used the stool. This is THE issue that freaks me out. I'm 51, in a rock band, and also gonna be trying out for a QUEEN tribute band. I've lost sleep over this issue. I have arthritis in my left knee and have to sit down. I don't want to lose work over it. My rock band understands and the guitar player is a woodworker so he suggested we build a custom stool that allows me to sit down like Jack Bruce, but doesn't take away from the show. I'm REALLY worried I'll lose the QUEEN gig over this.

I played a four-hour gig last night, and by the end of the night my legs were killing me. Add to this the load-out where I'm not only loading my gear but also helping my other bandmates as well. I think it's time for a stool to sit on when we play long gigs. These four-hour long gigs are hard on an old man!

First of all, I hope you can afford medical attention. Secondly, I’m sorry you are getting uncomfortably at gigs. That sucks.

Currently at age 67, I’m sporting two full tear rotator cuffs in my right shoulder that happened after a gig last summer. I might have time at the end of the year due to gig obligations (minimum 90 day recovery post surgery), so in the mean time it’s extremely uncomfortable. For now I’m gutting it out.

As for you, if you need a stool, have at it, and thank heavens your still able to play and share your art.

I use a stool when I do a jazz trio gig on upright. The guitar player and keyboard player both sit to play, so I take advantage of this and sit myself.
I just found a folding resin stool with a built in handle at Menards that will be more portable that my old, non folding wooden one. It was only $12 too.

I sit once or twice a set to rest in between more energetic segments. That $10 folding stool from Walmart (got mine from Target) that was mentioned earlier is what I use.

I have COPD and require oxygen when up and about, but I won't use it on stage. I sit when I can and hit an inhaler if I have to. I carry a POC any other time I'm standing and active for more than a few minutes.

Robert Fripp always sat in King Crimson,so... I'll always bring a stool, but standing can be necessary for looping pedal use, and sitting on the rug floor in studio / music cave happens also. As a trumpet player a stool helps those long rehearsal moments when the string instrument people are changing arrangements around or learning how to play something.

My feet are seriously messed up and standing for 3 - 4 hours makes them hurt into the next day. I’ve had a stool with me for years. Just a cheap folding bar stool for a long time but now I have a really nice one with a formed seat. It was expensive, but worth it and cost way less than any other major piece of equipment I own. I usually stand to sing which is usually no more than 10 minutes at a stretch. Maybe doesn’t look so good, but I couldn’t do this anymore without it.
