Time to switch to Dunlop Super Brights!!!

I am liking these strings more and more each day. They are such a great value for the quality of string they are.

Here is a crazy story...

I brought a Fodera 5er in to a tech to have the nut changed from E-C to B-G and a full setup. I forgot to bring a set of SB strings with me, so told him just to go with Fodera strings (my other Favorite) and I will pay regular price.

I get the bill when I pick up the bass.... Fodera strings were the equivalent of $40US!!!! I do buy them in bulk generally from Fodera for just over $20 a set when I buy 10, but $40 is insane for strings when SBs are so cheap. I bought a dozen 5 string sets of SB NPS from BSO during the sale and they were $13-14 a set!

My quick review on these:

They did not seem as zingy as other SS strings can be. I did notice a bit less bottom end than other strings. I have yet to try it with a band mix, so that will be another test. They do seem to be quite low tension strings (I went with the 40-100 set, but tuned to DGCF). I am not sure I would be using these again.

First gig last Saturday with these Super Brights and I must say I'm impressed. Finally got to crank it up thru my stereo rig and FOH system. Growly SOB's!!! Needless to say, these strings are going to be on my 4003's for a very long time. :bassist:

I thought I had another set of Sunbeams but I’m out.
I do have a set of Super Bright Nickels and have a gig this weekend.
Are these even close in tone and feel?

Edit: Sorry; I just used the search function.
Sounds like they are about the same tension, maybe not as smooth, similar tone, and possibly more clarity without having a harsh top end.

If anybody has any negatives going from one to the other, Id love to hear about it.
Sounds like the only real issue is getting a dead string in a package.

Yeah you pretty much have it. Expect a more open, crunchier sound from the Super Brights.

Not sure why you would be concerned about a dead string, I've never encountered this with Dunlop. DR, on the other hand....

Some of the earlier posts mentioned dead strings although I too have never had one with DR.
I assume this was an early manufacturing issue that has since been resolved.

Tried the SB’s on a gig last night which is a room we play often:
GB Shuttlemax 9.2 and 2x12 neo cabinet with a Spector NS2A

The strings feel very nice and like my old Sunbeams
Clear bottom, good mids, and not to bright.
Overall, I like the voice of the SB’s better; I wanted these to work to save some $$ although the SB’s last 3 - 4 months for me.

I just tried Super Bright SS on my Stingray and active J basses. I had been using Cobalts on the J bass and EB nickel on the Stingray (what it came with).

The tension was so light compared to these other sets that I had to raise the action on the Stingray.

I'm still deciding whether I like them. I expected a slightly brighter string, and these are way brighter. But overall I think they have a really musical thing going for them. I can dial up a bit more input gain and things don't sound clogged. I've been gravitating toward a more modern sound on all of my basses.

Anyway, the only thing I would say to anyone considering trying them is that, at least the SS Super Brights, are wicked bright.

I may give the nickel wraps a try next time.
