Have you tried the 40-100 set?

Yes I did. I have them on my 1980 Jazz Bass right now tuned to D standard. They aren't so bad I couldn't take them off fast enough, but they seemed a bit anemic. Right now, I do not have plans to try them again.

I do not offer up my opinion to discourage others from using them, but just offering up my opinions. My time with them has not been a waste.

I wouldn't tune NPS Super Brights down a whole step and expect them to sound great based on their low tension.

I love these strings (.040-.120 generally) and they are on most of my basses, but NEVER when I tune to Eb, D or Cb.

Maybe it is something to do with that. I tuned them down a step due to my gauge preference. This is why I said if there were ever a 40-95 set I would give them another shot. Also, I used the SS version and not the NPS.

If you tune down, I would go heavier.

I love .040-.120 strings, but when I used to tune down to C#, I used .050-.130. My .040-.120 strings were basically rubber bands when tuned down a step and a half.

For the most part, I do not tune down. 35-90 is my preferred gauge, but I have at least one bass that seems to like 40-95 better (hence the mentions to this gauge in my recent posts in this thread).

I finally ordered Nickel set (45-105) because you won't shut up about them, I was ready to buy Sunbeams but then I remebered these ones, and price is beautiful, so I ordered them, I hope I did a good thing.

I think you're allergic to nickel.

Neither. I've never had that happen on any string I've used.

Maybe I'll try and set and see. I like a lot of aspects of SS, they cut through the mix, they have nice growl, but I am starting to get tired of some the grindy harshness when playing a classic rock song. Looking for a little more warmth, but not flat wound territory. I still need some bite when the music calls for it. I have been using DR Marcus Miller Fat Bottoms.

IME the Dunlop SB SS are smoother/less grindy sounding than some of the other SS strings I've tried. More along the lines of Hi Beams than Prosteels.

Got a set of 45-105 nickels last week, just now getting to put them on. So far, they sound and feel pretty sweet. If they stay this way over the next few weeks, I will likely be stringing up the rest of the fleet with super brights!
