Don't have much experience with tapered strings, but was reading and it sounds like the tapered portion ideally needs to be a very short portion of the speaking length of the string. It would have to be really short for that to happen with the bridge design on my Ibanez SR basses.

Yup. Most of taper string I've ever owned are more or less 2" long on the small taper part (and I remember some even longer), which are okay for thru body stringing, but would be too long for top of bridge loading basses.
Now that I have none that requires low-B thru body stringing and that I still prefer tapered low-B, my choice is limited only to Elixir Nickel .130 taperwound low-B, which taper length is about 1.5", which I've found to be perfect length for top of bridge stringing.
I'm hoping there would be more choices, so I'm curious to know on these Dunlop taper strings.
Just put my first set of the MM Super Brights on my Sire V7, holy crap these are great sounding strings. I always killed Nickle strings fast and they'd develop a weird smell even after a few hours of practice. I'm hoping Stainless doesn't have the same reaction. These strings have put a smile on my face.
I just got a set of the MM for my Thunderbird. I always come back to the Rotosound RS66, but lately have been pretty enamored with the La Bella Stainless Steel (formerly Hard Rockin' Steel). Can anyone familiar with the La Bella SS compare then the MM? It's gonna be a while before I put these one.

Ok the sale is no longer in effect three years later but I just ordered some of these. It seems like they are exactly what I’d be looking for in a round wound string given the reports of lower tension and a good life span. Not sure how I missed these but I don’t think in 33 years of playing that I have ever used a set of Dunlop strings. We shall see.
I put a set of Nickel SBs 45-125 on my SR5 a couple of weeks ago after reading through some threads about strings that are a good match for Stingrays. I'm really digging them! I like the feel, tension, & tone. The kicker is the price. Less than 7 bucks for a 5-string set from one of my local well-known music retailers!! 
When the dude at the register told me the price, I asked him if he was sure it wasn't missing a "1" in front. He said, nope. I went back yesterday & picked up 3 more sets. If I changed strings every few weeks, I would've cleaned them out of their remaining inventory. I've given BSO my business in the past - and still will - but this is a deal too good to pass up.
DR Nickel Lo-Riders are my previous favorites. All things considered, these Dunlops are tough to beat.

$7? I would have cleaned them out at that price regardless. Certainly that has to be a mistake that won't be happening for long.
I think you'll continue to dig them, especially if you don't change them very often. When they go dead, they get really warm, but they still have a pretty decent zing to them when you need it.

I remember reading you describe that phenomenon with these strings on this thread last fall when I first tried these strings. It just happened to my strings in the last month, and oohh my goodness is it a great sound! And you're right, a bit of EQ and there's still some zing living in that tone.

Although I cannot compare MM DSBs to La Bella SS, if you like Rotosound 66s you will love the MM DSBs. Very similar string with better longevity.
Hey armybass, I just saw a thread with you extolling the virtues of the DR Fat Beams. What gives? I like the DSBs to stay in this thread but am a closet user of the MM DSBs!
Thanks! I ended up throwing them on, since I could just put the La Bellas back on if I didn't like these. That's what I ended up doing. I just couldn't bond them them on my Thunderbird. No problem.
I do think that Dunlop should update their packaging to hermetic sealing.

Dunlop has changed their packaging across their entire string line. This is something we are starting to see from many different manufacturers as well. They are ditching the inner paper sleeves.

As of today, I have officially renounced (For now) sunbeams and converted to nickel superbrights on both my basses.
