When I was a beginner I came across a quote (can' remember from whom) that all the greats are melodic players. I was stressing about that, because I wasn't a melodic player, I was meat and potatoes groove player. Gradually I started incorporating melodies in my lines. I'm still not one of the greats, but I'm melodic when I want to be. This is a great chance for you to hone your melodic and grooving skills. Granted, it is easier when there is chord progression and somebody playing the chords, but you can outline the progression and use the chord tones to craft melodies that work within a bass line.
