I agree with just about everything you've said here except that I think DSP is still a bit far away from truly reproducing the 'tube sound.' There are too many random idiosyncrasies in tube stuff to be properly modelled by DSP at this point. though it's probably not all that far off....

Properly designed digital stuff can and does sound very very good.

In double blind testing I bet people couldn't tell the difference.

But why bother, tube don't have the best "sound". The reference point isn't tubes. There's better sound out there.

On the point of this thread - what I do agree is amps should only have less knobs. And any tone control should be flat at 12 o'clock. For most if not all, 12 o'clock the sound is not flat on purpose - it's there to convince you it sounds different than other amps. You can't get a decent sound out of some amps because their weighting is so convoluted.
