Titan V12 owners!

Hi all,
I've been hooked to the Mesa tone for a long time and finally arrived at the utmost rig: Titan V12 into a PH 1000 RR Diesel Series (1x15; 4x10+horn).
Since we moved into a new and very small (16 square metres) rehearsal room /studio I obviously had to adjust its output.
However, even in such a small place and at very very low volumes (and I really mean low: master vol at roughly 5, solo at 6%) this rig sounds tremendous. I always use the DI-out signal sending it through the mixing desk directly to our drummer's headphones or to our recording desk as additional bass channel with the brilliant amp sound. A very articulate, warm -and at times brilliantly gritty- reproduction of what you're giving at it - in my case (I know, I know ...:D) WAL 4 & 5 string basses. I send the signal through an EBS comp via Evidence Audio HG cables and that's it. I love the Mesa Overdrive for the overall tone never loses its low punch and clarity. Forget about Boss odb3 or any other bass overdrive there is. For me it's the Mesa tone - period.
But being spoiled with also owning a Glockenklang Soul Light Combo sporting these incredible UK-made 2x10" VOLT-speakers and the Glock-mosfet-amp, I have to admit that for me this is the best tone for my fretless WAL. Its tone is very clear, even clearer than that of the Mesa's tube pre. Naturally, the tubes give it a nice warm feel, but the Glock delivers the utmost clarity for fretless playing. No effects needed - it reproduces the instrument's natural chorus sound perfectly. And it is also capable of going down to the low B without any loss at decent volumes.
These rigs are really worth every cent.

my buddy works at a local music shop and we had a rehearsal there last night.... so I wheeled over a Big Block 750 and Powerhouse 2x12".

I STILL can not believe what I heard and how much that put out.
Which of course has got me thinking/lusting/scheming on how to possibly get into a TITAN!!!!

That one rehearsal has made me reconsider every amp choice I've ever made as well as making me rethink what I thought my next amp would be.

BTW, pounding drummer, Matchless 2x12" combo.... Ha! NO COMPETITION for the Big Block so I can only imagine the bliss of what you TITAN guys feel while playing :D

Same setup as us. My guitarist doesn't have the Matchless yet, but it is paid for and on the way here. I hope it sounds good!

I've had problems with my titan since we recorded with it. I was running the slave out into a smaller combo that the studio likes to mic. I didn't think it would hurt the titan to run it without a load since it doesn't have a tube power section or an output transformer... but at our next practice, the volume is gone. It starts distorting very early and none of the volumes go very far. I'm thinking a mosfet problem. I need to take it to a mesa repair place soon.

weird. a MOSFET power section shouldn't need to have a load on it. :eyebrow:

maybe there is some funkiness with how the slave out works that there needs to be a load on the power section as well?

Hmmm.

Anywho, you'll dig the Matchless I do believe, great tones out of that as long as your guitarist knows what he's doing ;)

It's weird guys. I always assumed the same thing. But I remember when I tried out the V12(before I bought it) at the Mesa Boogie Store, one of the guys flipped out because I turned on the amp without the speakon cable plugged in, even though I had the standby switch on. He said it wasn't wise to do this, but it was probably ok since the standby switch was on. My first Titan was swapped out for a new one because of the power section. But ever since then, my newer Titan has worked flawlessly.

Maybe there is something to do with the drive stage before the MOSFETS that have the power section operating as more of a tube output section?

OR, could've been a design oversight and sounds like the newer models have the fix?

regardless, I haven't been able to stop thinking "Boo-Geeee"!!! (yes, Gee, as in , gee Miss, those sure are purdy.)

:D

I had to have 3 mosfets replaced in mine. When they blew, there was no sound at all. That was the 3rd or 4th time I turned it on.

Now, it's great, but there seems to be a few out there with issues.

Mesa did work overtime to help fix the problem. Props to them on that.

Now I'm kind of worried, though. Someone else's went down that I know of, and he's sending his back to trade out, I think. I wonder if I should, as well? I wonder if it's a bad batch of mosfets or some kind of design flaw.

Well, I just went out and played it again. Whatever was wrong must have been a hiccup, because it was at its full house shaking potential once again. Hopefully it stays like this!

I was a little crestfallen when it first happened... I wasn't sure if I was going to keep it around if something had really gone wrong.

I'm still waiting to see what Mesa has in store for an all tube bass head. When that comes out (if it does) I might give it a good solid look...

Ok, I have a recording of the titan in action.

This is my band's first demo. I used the titan as a preamp and ran it out into a combo at the studio. We mic'd the amp... Next time I want to do mic an amp and go direct too... But I like how this turned out.

Bass is a stingray 5 with a nordy pickup and flats.

This seems silly, but I can't find it on the Mesa website - and the dealer I ordered through doesn't know either - but:
- How DEEP is the amp head? (I know it's 3U high). I elected to not order the "retro styled head case" because I'm guessing it doesn't come with protective front & back covers (again, nobody knows?).

Need to get a rack on order to accomodate it when it arrives; I'd prefer the RoadRunner "effects" rack, but that's only 16" deep.

It only needs about 15" of rack space (actual amp is 13", then 2" for knobs, switch, etc)
