Hey all,
I haven't posted in a while, but in light of my recent purchase, I thought I'd add to the collective slew of reviews.
I'd been eyeing the Titan ever since it made its debut at NAMM over a year ago, and on Tuesday I strolled into the Guitar Shop in Mississauga and pulled the trigger on one. Simply put, this head produces the loudest, fullest and overall most righteous tone I've ever had the pleasure of hearing, and I've done my share of sampling. Prior to buying it, I was trying it out in the store and had it hooked up to a Mesa Powerhouse 4x10 and 2x12, as well as an SWR Goliath Sr. 6x10. That's a lot of speaker area, and with the gain around 10:30 - 11:00 and the master at 9 o'clock, the store was nearly torn asunder when I hit the low B on my Spector Euro5LX. I also gave a Fender Duff McKagan signature a spin, and it did a perfect "Slither" tone impersonation, minus a little bit of that sandpapery grit that comes from Duff's guitar stack. This head has what is, in essence, limitless headroom, not ever coming close to farting out. The 840W rating at 2 Ohms is misleading, and if the review of the M6 Carbine in Bass Gear Magazine is any indication of Mesa's power ratings, the Titan will probably be putting out significantly more than its rated power at 2 Ohms. (For the uninitiated, at 2 Ohms, the Carbine is rated at 600W but was scoped as high as 720W by Mr. Bowlus & Co., IIRC).
I'm not so concerned with the overdrive as I have a SansAmp PBDDI and a Fulltone Bassdrive, but dialing in a little purr gave some edge to the tone that was nearly a carbon copy of Rex Brown's tone on Far Beyond Driven. With the overdrive off and the gain at 10 o'clock, I was able to coax a warm, clean, tubey yet very responsive tone out of the rig. It is just as adept at tracking Jaco Pastorius 16th note runs in the high register as it is at loosening the bowels down low. The shocking clarity and power with which every note is delivered simply blew me away. Also of note is how the head sounds very even across the tonal spectrum; running the EQ flat, no frequency seems to overpower any other, as is often the case with low notes vs. high ones on other amps. This truly is the sign of a great pre- and power sections (I'm wondering how huge the transformer must be! Anyone peeked inside one yet?) I was hooked.
Now all's I have to do is pick up me 2 Bergantino AE410's, and I'm set
Cheers!
