Okay, I won't ASSUME anything. Seems to me that raising the neck of a bass in the pocket by means of installing a shim will lower the action. It also seems lowering the saddles on the bridge will do that as well, without installing a shim. The only time I've installed a shim was when my saddles were bottomed out. So, I was speaking from personal experience that a shim was NEEDED. But, I made the mistake(according to you) of ASSUMING the OP NEEDED to install a shim. I can't wait for your reply to this post.
OP never said it NEEDED a shim. He just said he DECIDED to install one. All I did was state the facts as they were at the time. Keeps your pants on and stop getting so worked up, or you might hurt yourself. Are you that guy who threw his 60" television off the balcony last weekend when his team lost? I knew that was you!
Do yourself a favor and ASSUME what I would post next if there weren't rules here.

Keep looking for that chip. If you can find it in one piece you might be able to seamlessly glue it back. What colour is it?.
That's the point, a finish chip caused by the owner's carelessness is definitely not a problem.

you should see my US Lakland Joe Osborn bass...that thing has so many dings, chips, scrapes, and a couple pretty goood sized gouges. And I don't care AT ALL. It's just not a big deal.
I find a lot of bolt on necks can benefit from a shim. Especially fenders.
If you're a gigging musician in a developing country & you just ruined a piece of gear that allows you to make your primary income, then you're immune to the "first world problem" comment

So anyway anyone who went to art school can probably do a really close color match with all the advances they've had in paint pigments, gel mediums, and clear coats over the years

In the pocket n' thumpy. So woody, so greasy...
That happened to me back in 2009, when I took the neck off my Godin freeway 4 Bass, in order to defret it. A little piece on the side of the neck pocket chipped right off of the wood and finish. I was pretty upset at the time but then I forgot about it after I got into the work of defretting the neck and filling it back in.Today I pulled out my beloved jazz bass of which I have many and decided to take the neck off and put in a shim. I cut the shim installed the shim and when I went to put the neck back on a chuck of the finish came off near the neck pocket. I am heart brokenat least the rest of the songs will be easier right. I can't even find the piece to re glue it back in place. All is lost. Jesus I'm ready to go.

I might suggest it is a problem to be bummed about an injured musical instrument whether or not people are starving. Also, becoming so attached to physical objects that they cause us sadness is a problem throughout the world. Let me also something I often fail at.
I get you. My point is that OP didn't co.e here for lectures. He'll likely be fine tomorrow and just needed to vent a liittle.... kind of likme blurting out ugly language makes you feel better when you stump your toe.

I still have this bass. It actually has a great sound with the bridge pickup soloed ; it gets that super Jaco sound and purrs like a kitten when I play up near the neck. Also, this bass has a split coil neck pickup in the standard- ish P position, and I have to say that with the neck pickup soloed it has a massive, massive bottom end sound with those strings touching right up to the fingerboard. I've never heard a passive electric bass with that fat of a low end sound. Through a good PA wit subs it's actually unreal.
