I'm going to take the controversial position here and agree with Bass of Galt - Ultravisitor didn't do much for me; In between the stuff I did like, there was too much free-jazz wankery and directionless beatf$¼kery. I listen to a hell of a lot of electronica, and have done for a while now, and maybe my tolerance for it was low that day, but I listened to it once and added it to the pile I'll get round to listening to again some day. That's not to say I don't like all of his stuff, and I certainly appreciate what he's doing. The "Square Window" promo I got with it had a couple of nice tracks on it, and Theme From Ernest Borgnine is still a favourite of mine.
I think it all boils down to my complete inability to enjoy those "jazzy" chords and modes and progressions, in any context. Dunno why (tone deafness, probably ), but they set my teeth on edge. Same with the random beatf¥§ckery - I've heard so much of that kind of thing, and only a tiny percentage of it has actually done anything for me; the rest all seems like aimless self-indulgence. Again, I dunno - it's just got to make sense to me in some undefined way, otherwise it's just some guy sitting behind a Powerbook who could be answering his emails for all I know.

I used to live right accross the road from Warp HQ in Sheffield when I was around 19. I could see right into their offices from my bedroom window, barely 30 meters away. This was back in the days when I was naive enough to believe I could make a living making my own music.
Most conversations evolved around how we werer going to get a deal out Warp before the end of the month.
So many memories of "inspired" late night recording sessions followed by waiting outside the Warp office door waiting for them to open for business that day. I've only been listening to Tom for a few months now, but I can already say that he is a friggin' genius. He is a talent that I had no idea existed. My collection of his works is only increasing week by week. So far, my personal fav has got to be "Go Plastic", track 5 is sick ! I've got to see him live, so he can screw my mind.

Not really it is hard to find any info on tom, there used to be a GREAT site with live video... But it has been down for some time...

Just a little context. Jaco's innovations on the instrument have trancended being "Jaco's style" and have become - "the way the bass is played". That kind of profound impact is rare.
Everyone on this board has been informed and influenced by Jaco to some degree - whether they know it or not.
Think about that - and all your taking for granted the next time you pick up your bass.

Good strong opinions indeed but I'm not so sure that I do stand on those fine shoulders. I wouldn't for a second doubt the unique light in which the bass playing world has been illiminated as a result of the late Mr. Pastorius work.
I'm sure that you can respect that some people might just not Like Jaco's music very much. I've nothing against it but it just doesn't touch me. I'd even go so far as to say that I'm quite relieved not to sound like Jaco (not as easy as you might think for a person of my gargantuant talent
). Who knows, maybe I just haven't listened to enough of Jaco's work. Maybe it's a phase I'll grow out of or only truly appreciate when nipple high, white nylon pants come back around again into fashion. Or maybe it's something I'll never get.
Why should Jaco's style influence me any more than Jamerson's or Mcartney's?
Squarepusher's already been doing this stuff for around ten years and rightly or wrongly will be remembered by some for far longer than Jaco.

Isn't this just typical. So I sit down in my lesson today to find that my teacher has just plonked down a sheet of chromatic fantasy for me to learn because. "It will do you good to understand this!".
I stand corrected, forgive me for probably coming across as such a smartarse, yesterday.

No I'm not terribly advanced. Apolgies for sounding above my station. It wasn't the whole peice, just bars 7-10, and it certainly wasn't intended to be played up to speed. It was more to do with maintaing a feel for triplets while jumping strings- not somethign a whole lesson was based on, just 15 minutes or so of gruelling mental torture.

I've been delving into the world of electronic music and found a new idol at the same time. I love drum n bass music, and someone i know suggested to check out Squarepusher.

Yes, finally!!! Some other Squarepusher fans!!! This guy is amazing isn't he??? I never cared for drum n' bass before I heard him. Definitely one of my idols. This guy is so talented and smart, the first time I heard Iambic 5 Poetry I wandered off to a dreamland... and then slightly teared while I was in it!! Then the track finished and I fell back down to earth. That's crazy man, I've never really teared before in my life as a result of extreme art appreciation. As soon as I picked up bass and really started developing a feeling for music, I want to cry everytime I hear some divine bass mastery or awesome solo. Sorry, I kind of went off subject there.
The man has fans everywhere, I've never really heard his work (maybe I should) but a while back I was messing around in a store and the clerk goes "Hey, was that squarepusher?", and I went like, "hmmm, no?"
