wow, I never heard of him until I saw this thread, and he fvcking rocks! his bass lines are so fresh and interesting and I'm assuming he has some jazz influence.

I especially love Iambic 5 Poetry, Sqaure Rave, and Beep Street.

can anyone recommend favorite cds?

Been a long time SquarePusher fan.

I would recommend the album Big Loada for a starting album.

You can also catch some sweet videos of him in concert on his website (google search) hammering away on a fender (or so it looks like) and smacking around a computer at the same time.

My favorite bass line of his comes off of the song "Lost in Space Drum & Bass 2000" I do not know which album it comes off of but it is super sexy.

Yeah! Squarepushers really amazing, he has like 4 CD's in my top 10. His jungley stuff is great but for me it's the jazz side that blows me away, you guys who have just discovered him are so lucky in that you have 100 or so squarepusher songs you will soon hear for the first time! I'd love to go back and listen to male pill 13 or the swifty again for the first time...

essential 'bass picks' include

It's worth noting that he uses a midi bass pickup, and allot of the synth work is played on the bass, ie the synth solo at the end of male pill 13, and some stuff in massif (stay strong), he also plays drums and is great on tracks such as tetra sync and e8 boogie.

his music just keeps me thinking and occupied all the time, i've spent some time recently transcribing some of his pieces, most recently 'the swifty' amongst others, if anyones interested in seeing them pm me!

He's fu**ing amazing but a bit weird - I heard a story from a guy I know who plays bass with the alt dance band Lamb, Jenkinson did a very noisy, nasty opening spot for them at a festival and basically ended up screaming at the crowd - my friend went to see if he was alright afterwards backstage and gave him his acoustic bass guitar and said he should chill out a bit! Apparently he's quite a lone figure in terms of what he does - but his bass playing is so completely his own thing I don't think I could ever really bring myself to sit there and work it out - plus the fact is some of it is just too bloody hard!

If you get a chance to see him live I seriously recommend you get down and check him out - I guarantee you will not have heard anything like it. What I'd really like is a full equipment list and a good look at his Warwick 6 string - when I saw him at Glasonbury Festival this year it was dark and raining and he was playing in an area call The Glade - it was without doubt one of the weirdest and wildest gigs I've ever seen - the guy kicks ass!

PS When I interviewed Gary Willis a few years ago I asked him if there were any artists / albums that had influenced him recently (around the time of Thick and Rocket Science, the last two Tribal Tech LPs) and he said Squarepusher - 'Big Loada' - he said he particularly likes the drum parts...so there you go.

He's that rare thing in today's music scene - a true original - not only has he got his own sound and style, musicially and on the bass, he can write great melodies, that mix a ton of different influences together - he's also an amazing bass player who's also mastered today's technology to be able to get on stage and do incredible solo, one-man-band style shows - phenomenal.

I saw him at reading 2003, something went wrong with the sound so his laptop etc would only play really quietly. after ranting for a bit he stormed off stage, and then came back on, chucked his beers into the crowd (one of which hit me in the head, painful) and then played the rest of his set on the bass (the only thing that was working properly). it was great, although I was in the festival mood and up for going nuts to some electro wierdness he really managed to carry the gig (for 45 minutes or so) with just his bass, great technical playing but it's overshadowed by his ability to play emotionally and to play to what the crowd wants to hear.

i've heard stories about his eccentricity, and ive heard about his angry rants but hey , look at jaco...

I met a bloke called bj cole on a week music school this summer who knew him and his brother(s), who agreed he was a bit of a genius, just as long as he eventually gets round to making some music that others want to hear (apparently not often!). and I met him in norwich last year and he basically said that he just makes the music he wants to listen to, and he's surprised and flattered generally that others want to listen to it as well! great stuff

for anyone who hasn't heard it, a MUST buy is hard normal daddy.

Just received Hard Normal Daddy the other day - BRILLIANT! I already had Ultravisitor and Budakhan Mindphone, but HND is probably my new favorite. It's a bit more cohesive, and it has that modern fusion feel I like. Oh yeah, the songs and bassing are killer too. Best 11 bucks [new] I've spent on a cd in a looong time.

Here's to hoping he plays out here sometime soon!

That's how I am with lots of good thought-provoking type music (another of my favorites of this type being Sigur Ros).


I don't know how he does it - it's so crazy yet so fitting. The basswork is quite amazing, as well as (obviously) the drums, and a lot of the other various used sounds.

Current favorite right now is Beep Street - such a fitting melody line - but the melody itself isn't complicated much at all.
But there are too many favorites for me too mention.


So what are your favorites? What do you like about Squarepusher? Any comments/whatever
