i’m not being antagonistic. i don’t work with wood or make basses from scratch so i’m asking the luthier a question out of curiosity. maybe because it’s the internet it doesn’t sound civil but i don’t mean any attitude beyond the simple question.

i retrospect i should’ve phrased the question: “is it hard to...” instead of “how hard is it to...”

It's no biggie. I usually measure about .5" from body to carve. It's just an aesthetic thing either way.

i see, i was wondering if there might be a mechanical reason for it. over the years beginning with the first fenders i see a tolerance built into the design which i assumed was because of mass manufacturing but recently i see really tight contour matching and i’m amazed that is possible on a large scale manufactured instrument. being that yours are handmade i was wondering if it is harder to get that match or if you intentionally left a space. thanks for answering.

The way the back is deeply cut for the belly all the way across is the way all basses should be cut on the back. Not that little pansy ass cutout right in the middle. This makes a lot of sense AND reduces the weight.

I'm in the process of building the new bass, some have shown interest in this design. Most of my builds are commissioned, the next one is not. It's same woods and design as the Turquoise one except 34" scale. I'm doing black hardware, Hipshot "badass" style bridge and probably Gotoh sealed tuners, J pups with passive electronics. Might do concentric tone/volume pot and 3 way switch for clean look, brass side markers and 12th fret top fretboard inlay. I'm considering bronze/burnt orange ish color or a blue, in satin. "I love satin it just looks and feels sexy to me" maybe opened grain finish. Would anyone be interested in this? I'm trying to keep it under 2k. My work is all word of mouth and don't have a website etc. Before Covid I also sold a handfull of instruments in Seattle at Emerald City guitars. Great little shop downtown.

Lots of questions to catch up on, I appreciate all the praise. I know this means a lot to my friend as well. He builds these all from scratch, his own design body design and hand shapes the neck to his/my preference. He sprays em and goes through the whole finishing process ( a month or so) and really puts his heart and soul into em. There is no neck dive, completely balanced and the tone is familiar but a bit more aggressive I'd say. We are located in Spokane WA.

I'll try and record some clips of it asap.

Awesome! I live in Rathdrum, work in Spokane Valley. I will totally keep your friend in mind when I'm ready for a new bass.

So my long time friend and guitarist in my band (Frisson PNW) builds guitars. He does everything by hand in his little garage. He's not only a super talented guitarist and studio engineer but also amazing Luthier.

Last summer I asked if he'd try building me a bass. He agreed and we designed it off of one of his popular guitar designs. I got the bass last night and used it during our rehearsals. The thing feels amazing, the neck is perfect, light weight (8lbs) and just sings.

This is the "Stella" bass after my daughter who picked the color and wrote her name down so we could screen it onto the back of the headstock.

Anyway, if anyone is interested in the bass let me know. He's decided to start building more basses since this one came out so great.
