OK, gang. I'm 62 years young, and although my personality is usually pretty kind and forgiving, I AM starting to get just a WEE bit cranky, now. I can actually become a cranky old fart. Here goes:
I totally get that many on this list are "serious" musos, and I appreciate that. BTDT. I also appreciate/understand that many are in this biz for, at the very least, a certain remuneration for their efforts. BTDT, also. I have been that pro, but I gave it up many, many years ago, for many, many different reasons, but I DO get it.
I would like those folks to try to understand that there are many, many others here on TB who play bass, among other instruments, for FUN and ENJOYMENT with little to no thought of monetary compensation. We read what is said here by *everyone* and attempt to glean knowledge and wisdom, and maybe even pass some along. That said (and I hope you're still reading and not jumping to premature conclusions - I already got that, on CL AND elsewhere

), my band does NOT do the pay-to-play thing, nor do we frequent open mics to hear ourselves play, nor to provide free music for greedy bar owners.
My hope in posting this on CL is/was to attract like-minded (like US) persons who understand where WE are at, who feel the same way WE do - that we enjoy playing because we have fun with it, and have no illusions about going big-time, or even, for that matter, gigging *regularly*. Believe it or don't, but there ARE people like us out here.... We do it because we like to play - for ourselves, our friends, and family. That we like to sound good should come as no surprise. I am surprised and dismayed that many here have misinterpreted what I'm trying to do, and try to infuse their values/priorities on mine. I thought I was clear -- my apologies if I was not. Remember, I lead with "hobby band". I did never state that we are an actively gigging band, or that any certain level of "professionalism" was expected, other than to have gear that is capable. If it were a little Casio toy with built-in speakers, it couldn't do what we want to hear/do. No crime in that, eh? Someone mentioned taking in an aspiring musician who could learn as she goes, and that would also be something we could consider. That situation has not yet presented itself. Would we like to gig? Sure, and we have, but still. Priorities, and all that.
Yes, we HAVE recorded a CD, and the people we have exposed to it, family AND not, have responded very favorably. Because we want to do more with what we enjoy, we want to get a bigger sound, with more options. No surprise? Good. When we finish it, maybe you'll buy one.
I am sure most here are trying to be helpful. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and thanks also to those who seem to get it. I have incorporated many of your suggestions. PLEASE try to understand where WE are at is all I ask. No need to flame, just comprehend.
Have a nice day, and GET OFF MY LAWN!

(Rant over.)
