Source? I think they've been playing with track (with at least a click) since they added all of the synths in the early 80s. I'm fairly certain they even track the lead vocals on songs that BFG can't sing anymore (i.e. Legs)... Go listen to the Raw album.

I miss the Dust, but Elwood is filling in valiantly for a punk guitar tech/player.

That was my first thought. While Dusty was all for weird and wonderful basses to spice up the visuals I can't recall any of them being anything other than a standard 4 string.

Would it be churlish to point out that ZZ Top have been partial to using novelty guitars and basses to spice up the visuals on their live shows and videos for some time now… can’t see that “bass” being anything different in that context!

And I agree with this too. Elwood is not Dusty and I can't blame him for making his own mark on the bass position in that band.

I don’t have a source and I wasn’t serious. That’s my go-to internet response when I see someone post a broad provocative statement without backing it up with proof, as I saw there. I was being facetious.

That said, playing to a click and air guitaring to a prerecorded track in live shows are nowhere near the same thing. Any group that relies on swells not being played by live musicians does that. If ZZ Top had been faking live performances, it’s news to me.

Right on! I have no problem with a little track every now and then, and I personally love playing to a click. Not judging them at all - their early live albums are all over the place tempo-wise, and I read somewhere (no idea where) that they decided to add click when they added the synths in the studio, so they could track the synths live. This is coming from a massive Top fan.

I’ve seen a couple of “musicians” demonstrating their double digit # of strings behemoths on YouTube and have not been impressed. Every string lower than B was just inaudible elephant farts imo .

You got that right. I noticed at the end of the video that it didn't take him long to swap it out for a more standard, and much smaller, instrument.
