I don't know. man. I'm not completely convinced that wasn't playing to tracks and faking it on the "bass". That is, unless that "thing" has a low E string on both the top and bottom.

IDK, he only used two of them, and as previously noted, they both appeared to be tuned to low E, so, even two strings would have been too many for this song.

No bigger ZZ Top fan than me, but they have been playing to tracks for years. Lol

Both my ZZ Top shirts are in the wash (Howdy, from a fellow Texan btw), but you mean some of the backing parts are tracked or are you talking full-on Milli Vanilli here?

Would it be churlish to point out that ZZ Top have been partial to using novelty guitars and basses to spice up the visuals on their live shows and videos for some time now… can’t see that “bass” being anything different in that context!
If he brought that to me for a setup - 4 truss rods, Lord knows how many strings, and what the thing is actually tuned to (I guess most of the strings it doesn't matter - maybe you tune the middle dozen or so strings to set the neck relief?) I'd charge him a bundle to work on that thing.
