Too passive aggressive?

I already know the answer. But I have a gig coming up with some buddies, all covers. And someone put a white stripes song on the set list. I HATE the white stripes passionately. It's guitar wanking music, and jack white sucks at guitar almost as much as meg white sucks at drums. If you were Joe Satriani and you made every song suffer just so you could wank off on the guitar that might be one thing, but when every song suffers just so you can wank off on the guitar, but you actually suck at the guitar, what's the point man?

So anyhow, this is one of their many songs that doesn't even have bass guitar. So I'm dying to just sitting there while they play it, true to the record. When that song sounds awful compared to the rest of the set and everyone looks at my sideways, I can just say I'm being true to the record and sitting this one out!

Anyhow, I love my bandmates. I don't want to be a passive aggressive turd. But god, the white stripes suck.

Moan fest over.

Well you're truly a bass player if you think JW sucks at guitar. I'd go grab a beer and have a little break as someone else suggested.

if you're in a covers band then you have to play songs that the audience will like / dance to
I hate both Wagon Wheel and Sweet Caroline.... but my band plays them because that's what the people want to hear.... I just grin and bear it and breathe a sigh of relief when those songs are done!
Ha, Wagon Wheel is on the list. I don't like the song, but I at least respect the fact that there are some musically redeeming qualities that would appeal to plenty of people. I don't even mind playing a song I don't care for, when the whole song for four minutes is Root, fifth, root, fifth, root, fifth, root, fifth, and so on, because for that style of music it is complimentary to the overall song. White Stripes have no real melody, harmony, rhythm, nothing unique or original, etc. the lyrics are usually mind numbingly stupid.

I think Jack White sucks at guitar because I'm a bass player (a decent one, not great), and I've never heard him play something I also couldn't play on the guitar, and I pretty much suck at guitar.

I think the Hypnotic Brass Band did a cover of Seven Nation Army. It sounded great. I am not too hung up if there is no bass guitar or double bass. Chris Potter who is one of my favorite musicians --- Ultrahang Underground -- that's plenty awesome project, no bass. Suzie Ibarra has a few albums with no bass player. One of my favorite modern albums is David Mott's Anagrams Just baritone sax and drums

I would not mess with Joey De Francesco or Dr. Lonnie Smith's superb bass hands and feet on the B3 with any other bass.

I actually dig the White Stripes.

There’s different definitions of “guitar wanking”.

Do something by The Dead Weather instead.

I am a bass player and thereby predisposed to dislike bands without bass. But I saw the White Stripes in a small club in Atlanta in 2001 when I knew nothing about them, because a buddy of mine had seen them on Conan (I think) a few days earlier and said we needed to go. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen. You may not like them, but they can play.

As for the question at hand, I would let my bandmates know I'm not a fan, but if they really want to play the song, I'll do it.
