Too passive aggressive?

I already know the answer. But I have a gig coming up with some buddies, all covers. And someone put a white stripes song on the set list. I HATE the white stripes passionately. It's guitar wanking music, and jack white sucks at guitar almost as much as meg white sucks at drums. If you were Joe Satriani and you made every song suffer just so you could wank off on the guitar that might be one thing, but when every song suffers just so you can wank off on the guitar, but you actually suck at the guitar, what's the point man?

So anyhow, this is one of their many songs that doesn't even have bass guitar. So I'm dying to just sitting there while they play it, true to the record. When that song sounds awful compared to the rest of the set and everyone looks at my sideways, I can just say I'm being true to the record and sitting this one out!

Anyhow, I love my bandmates. I don't want to be a passive aggressive turd. But god, the white stripes suck.

Moan fest over.
I feel you brother. Just hang on there, it'll pass.

My buddy loves to play "Already Gone" and he dives into a poorly done long wank-fest solo every time. I generally just stop playing after awhile, but there's no audience so what does it matter. While it was never my favorite Eagles song, I've grown to really dislike it.

This comment is more epic if you picture it in an action movie.

i voted "suck it up buttercup." time to step up and be the pro! ;) i'm sure most of us play tunes we don't care for, but we're musicians: we play music!

also, "someone put a white stripes song on the set list" doesn't rise to any level of 'drama'. you may want to rethink your role if you can't add a bass part that supports and commands. as a few have pointed out = this is an opportunity!

P/A and being a "turd" is operating at the 'poser' level, IMO.

good luck with your playdown!

Write an intricate bassline akin to Paul McCartney's line in Something, and turn the White Stripes into something less ...awful.

Why be passive aggressive when you can go full-on aggressive by planting a flag right in the middle of the song?

You seem awful, honestly

There has been at least one song I don’t like in every band I’ve ever been in, including original bands. If it’s a dud for the audience, use that as leverage to get it out of the set. If it goes over well, hold your nose and play it. When someone says they “ hate” a band or song it almost always comes across as snobbery.

You are describing my relationship with Journey songs. I’m not a fan of theirs by any stretch but if it’s on the list I learn it, and we hopefully play it, for I don’t want my practice to go to waste. That said - I’m getting out of the sub/hired gun business next month (six more gigs until then), but will play like a pro, with aplomb and with a smile on. Then I’m done.

I’ve never been in a band (or any group project) that did not require a little give-and-take on the part of each member. If that’s the only song on the set list that you’re not happy with, you’re in great shape.

Some of the greatest music is super easy to play. perhaps musicianship is not the best yardstick for determining what sucks?

i'd suggest broadening your appreciation of music by playing more songs outside of your comfort zone. embrace that!

theres a chance you might find yourself having fewer things to hate and less to whine and be passive aggressive about.
I’m just moaning about one band I love to hate, in a tongue in cheek kind of way. I already said I was going to play the song.

I agree that many great songs, particularly on bass guitar, are dead simple. With or without you - the four most cliche notes you could tie together into a progression, but that bass line is great for a song that is really well loved by many.

I used to not care for Jack White's music. But eventually I realized what a genius he is
and that new perspective changed my appreciation for his music for the better.
But I still wouldn't add a White Stripes song to our set list. Not that it might not go over well with the other tunes, but because it's not in my wheelhouse.
That's his thing and it's uniquely Jack's musical art, which I don't see as cover material.
