Tool tone/FX sticky thread ver. 1

Hey no probs...Im always willing to help somebody by contributing to any deets that i have "ironed" out over the last 5yrs.

To some of the comments...and not directed at anyone in particular....but when it comes to "Justins tone" there is a huge "spice rack" as Thom puts it

But i thought i WAS close when it came to plugging in a EBMM and a chorus and a little flange.....sure its close if your talking 46&2 or an "easier" cop-able tone such as that one.....

But when i started digging into 10,000 days and really listening to some of the hard grit parts from Lateralus, i realized exactly how FAR away i was from nailing the JC sound spectrum......My end result was numerous set-ups and adjustments of the Wal and realizing you need the whole "spice rack" to get what i did in my MKI Demo vid.

Justin's tech is mediocre close at best when it comes to duplicating his studio tone/overall sound in a live situation.....I mean his basic "tone" is there but the real gritty/chirpy stuff that you hear on the last 2 albums is missing.....

Im going to see them 2 days in a row on Jan 25/26th....lets hope they play some NEW shyte!!:hyper::hyper:

Firstly - you are not allowed to post things like when you are going to see them play live, especially for two shows thats just not playing ball - has Justin forgotten this little island called England! :crying:

But yeah I totally dig what you are saying, nailing the 'Aenima' tone is very easy, but that grindy tone on the last two albums I am convinced is impossible to get spot on without a Wal - and Jambi or Vicarious is just a mission. I am very close but until I have enough for the Wal, I am only ever going to be 'almost there':bawl:

Thought I might bring this thread back to life...

What settings do you guys run on your dirt-channel rat? I know the different kinds of rats were tossed around on here. But, I thought it might be interesting to see what different kinds of settings people run. Especially since the settings from the Dunlop video sound kinda meh.

I used to play my turbo rat with the filter knob fulley counter-clockwise... Almost every where i went people said it sounds much better when the filter is fully counterclockwised and when i bought one automatically i turned it down... Then i disecovered this knob and it's tonal possibilties and i think it sounds much better at 12. I use the distortion knob at 14 and i play it with a clean blend.

well the reason it sounds meh is because he has a modded one so it's going to sound different than anything you could get with it, TMB said he managed to get the similar sound with a different model of the rat (i forget at the moment) but I know he has gone into great lengths trying a bunch of variations of rat distortion pedals and figured it out, I'm sure he would be the one to ask.

Not modded, classic LM308 Turbo Rat.

I would bet every piece of my gear that JC's TurboRat has been modded

Anyone that has a Turbo+Boss eq...I suggest you try the settings from the Dunlop video, then you too will know that a plain old classic LM Turbo sounds like TARD (in this application)

I have done the shootout with multiple ProCo's (that means, at the same time and not comparing them 2 or 3 years apart) and my MKI demo video should show that i have done my ProCo "homework"

If anyone has vid/audio of theirs ...I'm all game to have a listen

ForumRunner_20120306_230241.png is how i set mine, but at the moment i am not bi-amping. I switch the rat on and off for various numbers. Sort of what jc does with the gt 2.

My grit comes from my overdriven valve head and a sansamp bddi. I just add more drive to get the lateralus and 10k tone.

Exactly. It's just awful.

Another thing I've found that instantly makes the rat sound awful is when the Wal's internal master volume is cranked up. It does not play nicely any pedal in my experience.
