I haven't read anything about ditching Wal, but when you've essentially been playing the same Wal bass for almost 25 years and then suddenly have a custom Warwick built with custom pickups and do some promo videos with Warwick, one can't be blamed for assuming he's making a switch

Eh, don't buy it. Id be very surprised to see him on a stage with a Warwick. Maybe I'm wrong.

It just makes me wonder how the new bass and pickups sound, if they were designed to capture "his tone" while he's simultaneously ditching the Wal basses/pickups that are the foundation of his classic tone

The Nordy MM pickups are actually quite bright when solo's without a pre amp, so with some careful EQ, it's certainly possible to get in that ballpark.

That said, creativity may be pushing him into new tones that a W felt right for. Or it's a good promo thing. Who really cares, I'm looking forward to new music whenever they feel it's right.

Until you see the context... he gets invited to teach/appear at a German bass camp sponsored to the hilt by Warwick. If you watch the video of where he's just been presented with the bass at bass camp it is much more "Errrm I was just handed this be Warwick this morning... it's nice an' all..." rather than "Well, the Wals are great but now I have the bass I've always dreamed of..."

What's the chances Warwick contacted him before the camp and said, "Great to have you along at the Warwick Bass Camp, we'd love to present you with a special bass to say thank you and present it to you when you're there... There's these nice new Nordy pickups, wanna try them in it? Any other features you'd like? Cool. Mind if we call it JC Custom model and feature it on the website?"

Come on, what would you say if they came to you and said that?

PS is it only me who thinks it's funny that when he went to do the promo photo shoot for the Warwicks he chose to wear a shirt with the word "USELESS" written on it? LOL

Granted. I thought he helped design the pickups too, though? Just seems odd to get a custom bass for no reason other than doing a camp/clinic when you've already got one of the nicest and most recognized custom basses in all of the rock bass world.

Well, *I* would say no because I think Warwicks are ugly and I'm already 100% satisfied with the Kiesels, but that's me.

When trying to get a Tool tone, don't you find that, when trying to select what gear to use,
choices always were a problem for you?

OK!, I'm on this. New pedalboard is done and "most" of the pedal setting tweeks are done, and I'm running a stereo set up with a clean and dirty channel.
I will be posting a video of my signal chain this week!....Then i will be doing a vid for the first time with the MKII Birdseye Maple.

Please post song requests (songs i haven't already uploaded to YouTube) I will consider all requests for the vid.

Right in Two is a good one and on my mini list. Brad did a great vid of this song. Has you seen it?

I may have. I've only seen maybe one or two for Right in Two. It's not easy picking just one. Maybe compose and do a medley!! That would be kick a$$. That way you could showcase your board too. Like Jambi used delay, right in two uses trem I think, then Jambi or H uses standout dist, then whammy in Vicarious. Some filter in the Patient. Some flanger on 46 & 2. The list goes on. But that would be super cool to get a medley of like 10 songs and use the parts where his effects use really stands out. Then come to the end and use a part of a song where his clean tone if very prominent and shining.

Hell to the yes! Tool is one of those bands that to me, don't make bad or "filler" songs. Every single song they make is then swinging for the fences. None of them peter out. They are mapped out and composed with time, thought and precision. All those listed are superb songs. Love that Peach cover. So moving and rockin.

That's my pick. I've recently acquired a Les Paul (not a Silverburst though) and a half Marshall stack and been hacking out some of Jones' guitar parts. Hooker is super fun to play. I recently went in a GC in Atlanta and lo and behold they had a Diezel head just sitting there waiting to be purchased for things such as this. Had to do crisis negotiations on myself to just walk away.

Adam Jones posted a pic on Instagram a few weeks ago of JC recording with the Warwick and how incredible it sounds. Can't find the post anymore. Either he deleted it or I'm blind.
