Tool tone/FX sticky thread ver. 1

Just for salivation purposes.......from 2 weeks ago

Is that two wahs with one piece of whatever the hell that is making them work together?

My guess is the first wah in the signal flow has had its wah "circuit" taken out and replaced with a fuzz. Last year he had a full size Cry Baby there and was using in in conjunction with the ToneBender for the part in The Pot. Initially in that spot was a modded Foxx Fuzz Wah.

Why would he bother with housing a fuzz in the wah unit? I've seen you suggest this a couple times I think.

I would imagine he is trying to re-create the sound of the vintage Foxx.
The only reason i could think of why he would replace the circuit in one of the wahs with a fuzz is to get it to turn on instantly when he starts rocking maybe?? but i think there are easier ways.
And don't you have a foxx?

I've watched the video and wondered about that part at 3:14 before, maybe he has both the fuzz and wah circuit set to turn on on the same switch there (which is usually dedicated for the fuzz) i'd previously assumed it was probably a bit of video editing. Idk, maybe he just always has the wah on and parked (I've wondered about it and have got decent tones like that before) my biggest gripe with the foxx is the backwards volume pedal functionality.

On the note of the stereo wah thing, i think it would be sensable to have one post distortion wah and one pre distortion. --- i know he could run his pre-distortion wah signal into both heads but i think for a greater effect the wah at the post distortion in the signal would be pretty dramatic.
He could do it a few different ways. I'm just spit balling.

I know if i could have went to one of the clinics i would have found out lol

"Turn on instantly" is exactly right. During the song he has to be very quick on turning the pedal on. So he leaves the pedal rocked forward and then engages it on.
Also his Foxx (and mine) have had the vol-pot removed to avoid this (bakwards vol) problem!
I'm doing a video on my board and demonstrate this exact thing. Should be up in a couple days.

did you remove the volume pot yourself? I'm a scared-y cat when it comes to yanking something out of the vintage pedals. So i bought a foxx fuzz wa (no volume) thinking i'd save myself the trouble but it still has the volume effect, but the fuzz tone was more badass then my other fuzz wa volume, so i kept it and ditched the fuzz wa volume but still.. have the volume issue.

I have seen a few permutations of Justin’s pedalboard, but I don’t recall have seen a dedicated buffer or a noise gate.
With such a large pedalboard I would consider this as a must... Why do you think is not using it?
He has plenty of buffers in those boss pedals. As far as noise gates if everything is powered correctly large boards are noise free.

Watch video @3:14

Also his wah was already running to clean and dirty when he had the single pedal.

Yes I understand that with the foxx it is ran in both signal chains. What I am saying is that he might have put them at the very end of both chains independent of each other, which i think would be closer to the sound on the record than having the rat after the wah as the case with the foxx. To make things clearer: Look at timmy's setup, he has two parallel distortion chains which he wants wah after, he uses the stereo setup to let both chains be wah:ed while remained separated going into each amp.

Also if he had modded a crybaby it is possible to simply ad a loop activated by one single treadle which im sure would have been thought of and dunlop would not hesitate designing a custom jc fuzz-wah. there are also proprietary solutions, such as the Invalid Link Removed, which could have been used

Didn't consider that. Makes sense having one at the end of each of the clean and dirty channel.
He would still be missing a very important part of his sound when used for The Pot, the fuzz!
Also, my set-up with the split signal and the Foxx sounds exactly like the album. So sounding "more like the album" wouldn't be happening.
He also has absolutely NO time to turn on an extra pedal to engage a fuzz. Using your idea he would have to do this. That's why I think he has a modded one to "try" this experiment. Rather than possibly wasting a pedal companies time just to ditch a signature pedal made for him that he ends up back with the Foxx again.
I just recorded part 2 of my signal chain, demonstrating my pedalboard sounds. I will be uploading it soon.

I also don't think a company would put this amount of effort/time/money on something JC is "trying out"....considering he only uses the pedal for about 7 seconds on one song they only play once in awhile, just to have him switch back to the Foxx.
He did try a full size cry baby, but that was gone after a few gigs. Tool has to also switch guitars which are tuned down lower just so Maynard can sing this song. So its very possible that this song disappears from live shows altogether. Another reason for a signature pedal that would be a waste of time.

Another thing i forgot to add. Having the Foxx after his dirt chain, rather than before (the way it is now) will change the sound of the pedal.
Someone has also mentioned to me that he personally talked to JC at the recent $500 clinics they were running that he (Justin) prefers the vintage sound of the Foxx and dont be surprised to see it make a comeback.
How true this is?, i have no idea. I guess we will find out, on the next tour.
