Tool tone/FX sticky thread ver. 1

I'm confused here. You're saying that his dirty channel is created by feeding the Turbo Rat+GEB-7 into a GK head, but that on his "main channel," he uses the SansAmp GT-2 for nearly all his distortions. Which is it? Also, does anyone know how he sets his GT-2? I've never tried it on bass but it just seems like an odd choice for distortion.
I realize this is an old post, but just to answer the doubts about the Tech21 GT-2 as bass dirt pedal, this video should prove that it's a really great pedal for the job, if Justin Chancellor using it is not enough proof:

Also a question: To me it seems from that Dunlop video like Justin got the gain turned all the way down on his GT-2 and then the 3 switches set at lowest position, but when I do that I get clean sound.
The British and California setting will have some dirt even with gain down the whole way and the middle switch set to clean, but it's still clean on the Tweed setting that from what I can see on that video is what Justin uses.
Do any of you see another setting than me of the GT-2 on that Dunlop video?

(Never mind, think I sorted it, the 3 switches are from my second closer look seems to be set to: Off Axis, Clean and California)

He runs the effects pedals (wet) to the clean amp, but then the same wet signal goes to the dirty amp? or he split into ch1 to effects then to clean amp, and ch2 to dirty amp?
As I understand it the FX go to the clean and dirty amps. The only thing I'm unclear about is if the DI signal from the Demeter Preamp also gets the FX. I think that it does if I'm getting what is said in the Dunlop TV video correct.

Which of these 2 distortion pedals would you choose for tool-ish dirty tone? Aguilar Agro or Darkglass AO? :eyebrow:

Just fyi, I've found the Tech 21 DP-3X nails some Chancellor tone. If you're not familiar, its produces crossover from biamped guitar and bass amps. It uses Guitar for distortion, Bass for clean lows. The Tech 21 guitar distortion used in the DP-3X is similar to the Tech 21 GT2 on Justin's board, which whether used for dirt/distortion or dialed back for clean its totally got that "tone" and easily cuts through the band mix like JC

New studio vid from Adam. At 5:22 Justins board is shown. It's pretty blurry but there appears to be a new red pedal on the left side of the board where the BR2 or MXR BEF normally is. I can make out the Tonebender all the way to the left as well. Can't make out which wah he is using, definitely not the white dunlop(s) though. Rest of the board is easier to see and looks as it always does

When Justin first took the Foxx-Fuzz Wah off his board (about 3years ago) He tried a full size Dunlop Wah (you can see it in vid, i dont think its his Tonebender)...and the Dunlop has no fuzz. Thats what the red pedal is.
It would have been a PITA with the limited timing he has in The Pot to do the pedal dance. (The only song he uses fuzz/wah together) So thats why now he has 2 babys joined together, one having the wah guts ripped out and a fuzz circuit put in.

Too bad its so blurry. Makes you wonder how old this footage is, considering cameras these days.

So this vid is either approximately 3 years old, or this is a backup board to his main one.
Its not uncommon for these guys to tease us with old footage. When everybody went nuts with "Justin in the studio" pic a few months ago? The pic was from 2005, and JC's dirt chain hadnt even made it to the board yet.

Hey Dean.. Almost positive that's the tonebender all the way to the left and not the full size dunlop wah. If you watch that sequence a few times and pause it in the right frame it becomes more apparent. I can see the orange lettering for the tonebender when watching Adam pan left to right. Still unsure what you are saying the red pedal is? I went to the Detroit clinic in May. I talked to justin and asked him about the wah's. He told me Dunlop was developing a new "foxx fuzz wah" style pedal for him. In May neither the full size or 2 joined baby dunlops were on his board, the Foxx fuzz was back in that spot..

Thats because he used his back up board for the clinics!
I will try a better res screen, but i micro paused that vid and you cant even see the sides of the black knobs of the Tonebender, which would stand right out against the grey.
Once they start touring the new album in 2020, we will find out any changes from his current live board, which i posted back a page or two

He also tried this pedal for a few months and it was gone. Im pretty sure he now uses the volume function of it, and has placed it before his tuner, for stuff like the beginning of Lateralus

**Edit** I should mention that he tried this pedal before the full size Dunlop.
