Best shots I could get of the board from Detroit

I was able to attend the recent Tool show in Melbourne. Justin appears to be taking a prototype of his signature wah on the road now. I attended both the Saturday and Sunday shows. Confirmed he used it during The Pot as well as the end of Stinkfist.

On the Saturday show I was right up front, standing about 10 metres away from Justin. Cosmetically, the pedal is a bit different from a regular Crybaby. The treadle section is off to the left. There were two foot switches to the right (presumably one for the wah and the other for the fuzz function). The pedal was unbranded - the base of it was silver and the treadle was a bronze or copper colour (makes sense if it's a prototype).

I also confirmed the following:

1. Pneuma appears to be the only song at this stage in which the Providence is used for delay over the Boss DD-3.
2. The Tone Bender is used on a lot more than just Jambi. I saw him use it during Fear Innoculum and Aenima as well. I would suggest it's his primary distortion, not the GT-2.
3. The tremolo-picking solo in Vicarious appears to be a combination of the GT-2, Boss Chorus and the whammy pedal. The whammy pedal was switched on during the second bar of the solo.

I can also confirm the previous poster's query: Adam appears to have replaced the silver plate Diezel with a Mesa Dual Rectifier. The old Marshall and blue face Diezel were still there.

Cheers

So you saw him rocking his whammy pedal during the distortion/picking part in Vicarious?

There are also no distortion parts in Fear and Aenima...so if he did indeed use it....he was just messing around.

There is absolutely bass distortion in Aenema; listen at the 3:40 mark on the record. Also listen at 8:30 on Fear Innoculum; I double checked and it matched up perfectly to when I saw him activate the Tonebender.

Regarding Vicarious, he didn't rock the whammy during the solo. The whammy is in the toe down position for the entirety of the song, so when it came to the solo, he just it the bypass switch on it.

Cheers

If you have a Tonebender (like I do) and know the settings he uses.......its not used on those 2 songs on the album, I can guarantee you that. The 8:30 part in Fear is punched in by Joe in the studio...its an overdrive and not a fuzz. (Again, if you have a Tonebender and try it in this spot, you will see what I'm talking about) Justin may have used it live for those first 3 notes. Since he has now taken his P.E off his board.
Same goes for the Whammy on the Vicarious bass solo (on the album) He does turn on the GT2 for the solo which is right beside the Whammy...

Did you happen to notice if he changed any of the knobs on the Tonebender, after Fear, but before they played Jambi?
In the past, FOH has boosted his signal for parts that he uses the Tonebender and the Br2.....both are a huge tone and precense sucker when turned on. I use a Boss eq in my loop with those 2 pedals because of it.

He did change the settings on the Tonebender prior to Fear. I doubt that the settings marked on the pedal itself (as seen in the Dunlop TV video) are relevant for anything other than Jambi. He frequently adjusts multiple pedals in between songs, so whatever settings he has marked in that video (where I think a lot of people take reference from, including me), may have to be taken with a grain of salt. The delay is obviously a good example, as is the flanger.

Regarding the fuzz in Fear though, I think we may have to agree to disagree. I didn't think there was fuzz until I saw him clearly step on the Tonebender live. I referenced it against multiple other live videos, and when listening to the track itself, I can hear the fuzz throughout that section at 8:30, not just the first three notes.

I do also have a Tonebender in any case but I'm still going through the song myself. See attached my setup (as an FYI, although I do have a Guyatone VTX like Justin, my one for whatever reason is incredibly noisy and thus impractical. Might need to get it fixed but the Boss one does the trick in any case).

You didnt read my post. Im not disagreeing with you, that you witnessed him step on the Tonebender live. Im saying what you are hearing on the album for that song and Aenema ISNT the Tonebender.
Once that you feel you have found a setting on your Tonebender that works with those notes after the first 3? ....please do share with us, a video demonstrating this. Because its very obvious those notes after the first 3 sound like a Wal....and the Wal tone completely disappears with the Tonebender on.

That's not what I was disagreeing about. My point was simply that there is fuzz at that section of Fear specifically. Whether or not it's the Tonebender I can't say for certain as I obviously wasn't there when they recorded the album, but the fact that he definitely uses it when playing the track live would lead me to infer that it's what he uses on the record. Otherwise, why would he have used something different? It isn't as if his equipment setup has changed drastically over the past 10 years.

In terms of finding an appropriate setting on the Tonebender, naturally I'll endeavour to do so, but it's fairly academic considering that although I also have a Wal, whatever sound I come up with will probably only work for me and sound very different if you dial it in on your Wal and TB.

There are other examples of JC using something different live, than what was used on the album.
So you just go with "Oh if i see him use it live...thats what was on album" line of thinking.

My reasoning is that I saw him use it live, referenced it against multiple other live videos and listened to the record and heard something that sounded exactly like the Tonebender. Just my ears though.

I'd like though to move on from this, it's just tiring.
I call you on your reference comment. It could very well be your ears.
I get notified of every live Tool video posted on Youtube....show me ONE video used as a reference to your Tonebender comments.
70% of the live Tool videos, they barely pan over to Justin. (compared to the other 3)
Especially since the camera ban...most of them are from festivals and you dont see his pedalboard from g.a.
I guess its "tiring" because all you're doing is talking, instead of showing? I have NO problems learning something new about Tool...and have no problems apologizing for seeing it differently in error.

Although, the audio here isnt that great. Its does support both of our stances on this.
You can see Justin shift towards the Tonebender for the part. The notes after the first 3 the first you can hear. Those notes the 3rd time with the pedal on, have almost disappeared. Supporting my view on it being an overdrive that was used in the studio because the Tonebender (fuzz) cant do it. Its possible he did use the Prescription Electronics OD in the studio. But ran out of room on the updated board to keep it. I will pull mine out and see what kind of sound i can get with it.
There is lots of stuff done in the studio that just cant be duplicated live. The worst being the very "squishy" part you here on Right in Two @ 6:16
This discussion hass promted me.to dig a bit.deeper into this and I learned something new today about Fear!...those first 3 notes are down on the neck...i have been playing it up high
