Maynard Vs Labrie

Now i used to love maynard and i thought he was this lyrical genius, but then i realized he wasnt making sense(lyrically and personally) and his voice got extremely boring. Labrie on the other hand has tremendous range and is also very musically talented. I dont know why everyone is trashing him, i think he is amazing and i think his voice is beautiful. I dont know i guess it just takes getting used to.

Petrucci Vs. Jones

Technically this is beyond a joke. Petrucci. But the big thing seems to be that Petrucci only shreds and has no feel. Boys listen to the Voices solo, listen to his melodies, listen to Hell's Kitchen! The thing with Petrucci is that he uses the slower melodic stuff the same way a blues player would use the fast runs. When he does it, it holds more weight. Jones uses the same riff over and over again.

Myung Vs. JC

HAHAHAHAAHAHAHA. HA. Ha. Man, this is by far the most ridiculous comparison i have ever seen. I am sorry but JC's bass riffs are first off simple as pie, and are secondly all the same!! Man anyone who thinks JC is better needs help. Lots of it. Myung is probably one of the most talented MUSICIANS on earth. Lets put aside his insane left hand speed, ridiculous right hand fingering technique, blazing 2 hand tapping, flawless chapman stick ability, and his completely underrated vibrato and bends(JC can not even shine Myungs patch cord in any of these) and look at his tone. Lifting Shadows Off a Dream, Learning To live, Metropolis, Change of Seasons, Scarred, Blind Faith....all songs where Myung doesnt neccessarly play blazing fast, but lays down beautiful melodic lines. Nobody can touch him.

Portnoy Vs. Carey

Ok guys come on now. I dont think i have read a post that has said Portnoy yet, and this is a travesty. As an aspiring drummer the first guy i looked up to was Carey, until i found Portnoy. Maybe you dont understand how difficult some of the things Portnoy does are. Carey is by no way a slouch, he is one of the best around. But he also "overplays", its just that Tool's style of music allows for that. With the band i would say they are both equal, technically Portnoy is a couple steps ahead.

Ok now for jordan Rudess who does NOT get enough credit at all!! Next to being one of the most recognized pianists and composers out there, he has also played with a list of bands that is way to long to put here(go to his website). Which shows his diversity and incredible music knowledge. And the fact that he joined DT and had to learn all their songs is pretty nuts too.

Now this may sound biased, but Tool was my fav. band for quite a while as hard as it is to believe. But they grew old quickly and then i found DT and they have been my fav. since(2 years). They dont grow old, thier songs have so many layers and thier albums all inter-twine.For anybody who thinks Tool is better, listen to SDOIT Disc 2. A 45 minute long song which has all of Tool and a basketful! Im stopping now even though i could write another 4 more paragraphs i will stop because it seems elementary to me. DT is such a full combination of all styles of music, and thier playing is unparalleled. Go and learn Dance Of Eternity and then say Tool is better. Hahaha Tool over Dream Theater, imagine!

First off, it's called opinion. Someone could just as well come in here, and counter everything you just said, and then call your opinion a joke. Maybe people aren't exactly like you, and just may like Tool more. Is that a joke?

And i completely disagree about Maynard. He writes some of the best lyrics I have heard. Good point by J_PARMER.

how can anyone say that someone's lyrics dont make sense? did U write the song? did maynard write songs for U to understand? no, he wrote what was inside HIS mind and what he feels. as does every songwriter. just because the song might not make sense to U doesnt mean they dont have meaning. u cant just judge maynard on that because of your own ignorance.

What I like about his lyrics is that since Aenima, they make so many allusions that a listener needs to do actual RESEARCH to understand what he's saying. Thank Tool for the FAQ on toolshed.down.net !

I really dont think that playing more difficult music makes it better music. Would DT be even better if they were all born with one finger each and had to play like that? It would be harder to play. Would that make it sound better? I like Tool a lot and I dont like DT at all. Is that wrong? This is the same as saying "dude, a guitar is harder to play than a bass, bass sucks", whether you believe that or not, its stupid because difficulty does not equal quality.

rant over

BTW - I do like Justin Chancellor more than John Myung

In Portugal we have a sentence to tell people who come up with that kind of statement. I'll try to translate without offending anyone (it's not my purpose)

"Eat sh*t.
... Millions of flies can't be wrong!!"

By the way, you can't fill an arena with "the same crowd". DT and Tool don't have 'the same crowd'. I'm off.

As for Maynard (or whatever the Tool's B.P. is called) over Myung. Sure you ppl can prefer Maynard. Many ppl also find Kurt Cobain to be the best guitarrist ever. "Guess what? He isn't" (adapted from you know who) :D :D :D :D
