top 5 BRITISH bassists whose PLAY you admire

Chris Squire
John Paul Jones
Danny Thompson
Dave Holland
John Entwistle

in no particular order. Many others in bands (like ClockDVA's bassist) and session players w/a must mention of Bernie Flowers who had two of the most iconic 70s basslines on "Rock On" and "Walk On The Wild Side".

5 we haven't had so far:
John Deacon
Peter Hook
Justin Chancellor
Lemmy
Keith Richards (yes!)

(i do also love Squarepusher, Geezer, Steve Harris, Ox and many others...)

EDIT - Jah Wobble! ok i'm having 6.

DOUBLE EDIT - i see we had Deaky and Hooky already. my apologies, good choice there those who mentioned them already

Going for a new-wave / guitar band based theme here... In no particular order... based on quality of hooks, memorable lines, etc, rather than flat-out technical ability.

- Bruce Foxton (The Jam)
- Tony Butler (Big Country)
- Derek Forbes (Simple Minds)
- Andy Rourke (Smiths)
- Paul Simonon (The Clash)

Not all technically the best, but excel within their genre and have contributed to the great catalog of bass lines, regardless of genre...

Such an underrated bass player. That guy and Johnny Marr made that band IMO. My top 5:

John 'Thunderfingers' Entwistle
Andy Rourke
Peter Hook
Chris Wolstenholme
Jack Bruce

ooh i'd forgotten about Andy Rourke. 'Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now' must be one of my favourite bits of bass playing ever.

he's very appropriate for the thread as a 'player' player, not so much a 'tone' guy, if that makes sense. not that his tone is bad, it's just not the main emphasis.

John Entwistle "The Ox" (The Who)
John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin)
Glenn Cornick (Jethro Tull and Wild Turkey)
Sir James Paul McCartney (Wings, The Quarrymen, and...uh...oh yeah The Beatles)
John Wetton (King Crimson, Uriah Heep, Asia, & many others)

Plenty of others too
