Tort guard hate?

I have always been a HUGE fan of the gold-guard-on-black look. It's not common and it's kinda classy..

To me Tort reminds me of when my cat vomits up its food. It looks exactly the same way.

Apologies if this has been covered ad naseum here, but I’m new to the fold and lazy about searching, so here goes: why all the tort guard hate? Personally, I’ve always been a huge fan of tort guards; probably my favorite guard option. Am I in the minority? Lay it on me, TalkBass, what say y’all?

In addition to the monstrosity above, I also happen to own the most hated bass on Talkbass. Yes, this burst/tort Precision is now strung with flats. And, yes, they are LaBella Deep Talkin' Flats. And, yes, it IS a five-string. And, yes, it's fan-f'ing-tastic!

And 4 out of 5 bass playing dentists recommend tort over the next leading brand...

I have a black fender jazz and when I look at it a reddish tort would be perfect. And it has a maple fingerboard..... Tort has been an amazing pickguard for years.

Some people don't like tort.

Those people are usually a bit creepy - and they tend to use "modern" looking instruments themselves - preferably wireless Carvin basses that are blue.

That is a totally false and prejudice statement. I like a quality tortoise shell PG on certain basses and I don't play a wireless blue Carvin nor do I own a "modern" looking bass. But I am creepy, so your wrong.

I get better mids out of tort but the sustain boost with an aluminum pguard is undeniable.

I once added a tort guard to a cheap Korean bass and it increased the tone by 34% . People swore I was playing an American Fender.

A modern design dressed up to look vintage just doesn't work for me. Stick a parchment 'guard on there and I would be happy.
