I like tortoise shell. Just bought myself a sheet to get a lefty pickguard for my P-bass clone (the standard Fender/Squier ones don't fit, neither do the GFS/TNT/etc..., so gots to make my own)

Got this off e-bay for like 23 bucks CND:

They call this 'magma' tortoise shell. Much prettier in person than the photos suggest. It's not a photo print, thankfully, but real swirl, and it does have a certain depth and translucence about it. Going to call up my local luthier and have her fashion me a pickguard, offer her the leftovers. She probably could finagle a few SG or Les Paul or even some archtop type pickguards.

It's kinda of a shame that a P-bass doesn't have nearly an efficient footprint like a Jazz's. I could easily fashion a couple of Jazzes or even Teles from this sheet (43 cm x 29 cm)

For those interested to get themselves a blank:

I like it better for a bass- let the tortoise keep its shell.
BTW: I've found some of the real stuff on the beach, and it's pretty, especially if back-lit,
but not nearly as dynamic as the sheet above.

After seeing this, I bought a sheet from the same source. It IS pretty!

When cutting the sheet, you get that familiar "vicks vapo-rub" nitrocellulose smell.
