Half dome for the win.
Went through the tiny village of Swan Quarter, NC for work yesterday. Love that place. It's the launch site for the ferry that will take you to Ocracoke Island.... one of my favorite places on Earth. Did a little bit if riding around. I happened to find the dock where the real fisherman work. I had never seen it before.
Then I stopped at a "wildlife viewing area". It was a tiny pier at the end of a 2 1/2 mile gravel road through a marsh. The scenery was awesome. But I've never seen soany snakes in my life. They were EVERYWHERE! I'm not all that afraid of snakes. But even I was starting to get nervous when I could count NINE that I could see at one time. Every snake pic is a different snake. One pic has two in the same frame. The last pic is from the road. Marsh as far as the eye could see in both directions.
Tomorrow a buddy and I will be doing another one of our long(ish) kayak trips....about 21 miles. I swung by to check out the ramp where we intend to launch at approximately 8 a.m. local time. Hopefully it will be as fun as the trip last fall recounted here. And, yes, I've since replaced/upgraded my paddle.

Should be 55 degrees (F) when we launch and close to 90 when we dock. Our uneducated guess is about 6 hours.

Yes, they're called "crab pots". Commercial and non-commercial fishermen have them all over the inner and outer banks of NC. We keep a few at our beach place. There's nothing like going and gathering some fresh crab and oysters from a bed nearby and cooking them up right then and there.
Nice stretch of water for a paddle. I have a week in the Trossachs coming up on the shores of the Lake of Mentieth in July. That lump in the far distance is the monroe Ben Lomond. Going to try to get my 11 year old up there if the weather is good enough.

So that's the "real" Ben Lomond. Cool! Here in the Santa Cruz mountains we have a small town named Ben Lomond, with a nearby lake named Loch Lomond. It's almost as if some of the early settlers were Scots...
I’m hoping to get the boat into Loch Lomond as there are a few islands to explore. In Scotland we’re fairly lucky that we have the right of access to most waterways, unlike our English neighbours who need a license, I believe.So that's the "real" Ben Lomond. Cool! These belong on a calendar, or in a book, or both!
They looked like crab pots. I’ve been crabbing in LA but the crab pots (nets) are different. They’re collapsible nets, circular and fully open on top. Similar to what’s in the video. We would tie a fish head or tail in the center. With 10 nets you can bait and drop the first one in and by the time you drop the 10 th, you can return to the first and there’s three or four crabs in it. We would bring two ice chests to fill. We’d boil them with salt, a bulb of garlic and bay leaves. Clear the table cloth, lay down newspaper, and melt some butter with garlic salt, add a few pony Miller beers and you are set.
