My latest ditty, just working on open Dm (DADFAD) slide on 12 string (as if slide intonation wasn't challenging enough, gotta make it a 12 string too lol).

Ok, one more as I have not posted for a long time here. I do many things, some experimental which is what's been happening lately. But this is from the band days. This was the last full fledged song I wrote for the band. Ten years gone, two members dead. Leaves the two outside men in this photo to carry on. Hell, I'm too old for the band thing anymore. Just amateurs
This is simply called "late". Written with a particular drummer in mind...
This version of late was performed live during one of the weekly rehearsals in the brownroom... That as opposed to the studio version.

Here is a note of interest... Sound cloud cut off a tiny bit of the first note!
Some of the note is still there, but they jacked up my intro!

I've notice Soundcloud doing that a couple of times, but it normally doesn't happen to me - though maybe that's because I usually have a couple of seconds of "dead air" as I switch from running the PC back to the playing. :)

(You'd think perhaps I'd be getting better as I went, doesn't seem to be the case here, though. Keeping at it anyways. :D)

(I really need to get my "real" music PC set up and running, way too much latency on this poor little laptop I've been using. Of course, I should close other windows when recording, I typically have about 100 or so Chrome tabs running...)

When I hear "cigar box guitar" I tend to think "primitive" blues or country. This is really cool, very much outside that expectation, I like it!

These were multi-tracked in my home studio on Reaper using the included plug-ins. Although I'm not opposed to using audio loops, samples, or VST instruments, none were used on these recordings. I've been using Reaper for a couple of years now and I'm still learning, and realize there's still a lot I don't know. But I'm pretty happy with how polished sounding these turned out.

An instrumental version of a song I used to perform in my old band in the early '90s. When I was recording this, I really thought a fretless bass would fit well for this song, so I spent part of my stimulus $$$ on a new lined fretless Squier J-bass. Bass was recorded direct through the DI of my PF-500, with a little bit of drive and a moderate amount of compression. Twangy guitar lead starts about halfway through.
Recording breakthough: learned to insert measures with different time signatures.


This tune came about from noodling around on the ukulele. Started with a couple of chords, then added a couple of fingered notes and played it in double time to make a "chorus" with some tension, then I threw some noodly 'solos' on top of that. The annoying whistled melody popped into my head and stuck there. Sounds to me like a TV theme song for bad 70s sitcom. Bass is probably my G&L SB-2 with two mics on my Acoustic B20 practice amp. Used an kick drum mic and an Audix i5 and blended them.
Recording breakthroughs: mic'd whistling; it took some experimentation to find a position that would pick up a good level but avoid chuffs, puffs and plosives. I also mic'd and played my kid's mini drum kit (kick and hi-hat) but it's mixed way back.


This last one is a sleepy, classical sounding tune. I can't help but think I've subconsciously plagiarized another song, it sounds so familiar. instruments are double tracked ukuleles, string synths, and a bass line is played on a 5-string Ergodyne and a Wurlitzer e-piano with the tremolo turned up.
Recording breakthrough: learning to use tempo maps, because this song has a slight ritard at the turnaround.

My Dean Backwoods 12 string banjo guitar is now an electric 12 string banjo guitar! Installed the Schatten Banjo Pickup / Condenser Mic kit this afternoon, seems to do a very good job of grabbing the sound (my playing, however, remains embarrassingly mediocre). Darn thing has narrow string spacing like a mandolin, my fat sausage fingers just don't fit lol. Also using full fingerpicks a la Jorma, still learning on them. Anyways:
