It’s probably the exact right time and place to ask:

-What experience do you have with trying to get a touch screen to respond to callused fingers?

-Do you have any personal methods of eliminating any difficulty ?


I always used to think it was a peculiarity and a thing that bass players had to put up with. It gets tiring though. I have only used iphones since 2017, but had a computer to type on. In the last 2 years I’ve not had a computer and rely on my fffffphone to type. It’s a chore.
I am predominantly left handed but only play bass right hand style, Thus ALL my left hand digits apart from “3” and thumb are trouble.

Change to right hand for phone?

i see people using their thumbs with incredible speed, is this a more standard way?

I've never had any trouble even though I hate them with a passion, to me they're a necessary evil. I use my plucking hand index finger to type which is calloused.

I have calloused fingers on my left hand from fretting, and on my right index and middle fingers from playing finger style. Sometimes I have to revert to a stylus.

Sometimes I can lean the affected digit one way or the other to get the touch screen to respond. Or use my little finger on my right hand.

I try to keep a stylus around, but I keep misplacing them.

I have always used my thumbs, but even when I do use my fingers for something else like playing certain games, I have never had a problem with the callouses.

However, when biometric fingerprint readers first started showing up, those wouldn't work for me unless I used the ring finger or pinky on my right hand, or my thumbs. More modern fingerprint readers seem to do a much better job.

I hear you. I have Otterbox defenders on all my technology which compounds the problem. Anyway, when that happens, I use either the the pinky finger of my right hand, the thumb on the left, or a stylus.

I’m playing flats and it’s still a problem for me. Happens all the time. Particularly maddening when I’m tryna cut & paste. Hate texting, regardless. I wanna get everything all at once rather than be tied to a device I despise in the first place. It’s a problem when communicating with anyone under 40. Toss in the fact that I can’t get the goddam thing to work near the corners unless I stand on one leg and use my pinky, and I’m ready for the apocalypse…bring it on…

Yeah it can be frustrating. Idk why but it seems to help temporarily if you rub your fingers together against the meaty part of your thumb or palm.

Yeah, thumb(s) is a common way to go. I've done that myself, once I saw others do it. Seems easier to me.

I have calluses. But haven't noticed a screen problem with them. Though they're not super thick at present.

Industrial strength calluses here.. Yeah, very annoying to peck on the touch screen.

Switched to flats and other bass nylon wraps and it pretty much went away, but I play less now. Plucking calluses now aren't hammers like they got to with rounds, they are there but much less evident. Plucking calluses about the same as fretting hand calluses.

I didn't switch strings because of not being able to use the cellphone, but it has been a welcome benefit.

I find it the tips , I’ve made it a habit to use more of the side or pad of finger used.

I’ve got gloves on my hands from the work I do.
I can just about take a cookie sheet out of a hot oven bare handed.

huh, and I thought i was the only one having this issue! it's annoying. other than using dictation (voice-to-text) you don't have many options

I had to use my nose to answer my phone in winter. Maybe use your nose to touch the little microphone symbol and just talk to the dang thing.
