Touring for "exposure"

View attachment 4960888

This is the place that runs The Extreme Tour as one of its many ministries. You're really not allowed to be critical of anything church-related. So, I'm not saying anything critical. I'm just saying that this is the place that runs The Extreme Tour. 31542 Railroad Canyon Rd Ste 3 Canyon Lake, CA, 92587-9485 and you can zoom in on the window.
Excellent vetting!!!

This would be a great TV show:

It looks like there is no more support...

This screams pay to play. Not just pay to play. Pay to play, but more complicated. More complicated in an attempt to obfuscate that it’s pay to play.

This form letter “you’re a preferred applicant” (that every band they scraped from bandcamp or band mix or wherever got) offering a discount for a fee you shouldn’t have to pay, for an audition you shouldn’t have to play, is a rehashing of the same nonsense I’ve seen over and over. “We’re giving you the opportunity to be a rock star! Just buy some tickets upfront and sell them to your fans and friends and family and people who are already. What do we offer? Free soda and snacks, and exposure!”

If this was a legit gig, you would have been directly offered a spot on a tour by a human who saw you perform live and spoke to you, in person before sending an official invite with a negotiable contract offer.

And before it’s pointed out that you don’t have to give money to play, playing for free is paying to play. This company stands to profit from your labor with no compensation. Their event wouldn’t exist without your highly skilled labor. Don’t devalue yourselves and don’t devalue us all as musicians.

wow. their application/audition process is crazy. and their three tiers of success makes them seem shady, tho since I haven't been on something like the warped tour, maybe it's not. I don't know if unknown bands on legit (sorry - established) tours get the shaft like that.

and I scanned it quickly, but I didn't see any mention of money. unless a band really wants to just be in the business to evangelize, I would advise blocking the email address that sent this.

I just got a random email about participating in some tour this year. I've been working hard with my personal brand, and decided that I wouldn't mind "auditioning" to provide artist support.

Then... they sent the details, and my "this is going to cost me a small fortune" detector went off.

Let's discuss the hidden gotcha's from their website to help the next up and coming musician.

The Extreme Tour

From their FAQ - I underlined the key things to be wary of:

HOW MUCH DO I GET PAID,AND ARE MY NEEDS TAKEN CARE OF WHILE I AM WITH YOU?
Of course, it goes without saying, like any other charitable effort, this is not necessarily something to do to get rich. But we do work hard to take care of the needs of the artists that participate. Unlike most other tours of this size which provide accommodations and meals for only the headlining acts, EVERY band that tours with us has their food and lodging provided for at each performance date. And, unlike most other tours of this size that take a percentage of the merch sales from the bands that are part of the tour, the Extreme Tour takes no percentage of the band’s merch sales.

Some bands may receive enhanced support for being involved in elements of the tour beyond just their performance, and some bands may also receive enhanced support based on their role in the Tour Events. Specific details will be worked out with each band that is selected after they have been notified of their selection.

Apparently it's some Christian outreach program, hardly about the music at all.
But I have seen similar stuff, most recently a post on CL where some artist wanted a supporting act. The catch was that you also had to play in their backup band, but you'd get a 30 min warmup set. Besides that you'd be treated like part of the band, get accommodations, food, and other benefits. Didnt seem too bad, but it was located way way out in the sticks and they wanted you to relocate for 6 months, to have it "as a base" while touring.
Idk, seemed sketchy too.

"Touring for exposure" isn't really a thing anymore IMO, unless the main act is VERY famous. You're better off making clickbaity tiktoks to promote your band.

Misery loves company and you will have lots of company on this tour . You only do this if you and your bandmates can afford to hit the road just for exposure . This is going to cost you money that you will not recoup unless you sell a lot of swag and can travel on the cheap . On the plus side , you get to travel and perform and sleep in Motel 8's if your lucky and get to eat lots of highway food........sign me up .
