I can't say without having them side by side in the smae room. My room acoustics aren't very good and I'm pumping trhough an Ampeg BA115HPT and I'm clipping the mids on the amp right now (normal setup with my Precision). I'm also putting the dials all over the place exploring the sounds the Obsession will give me, trying to get rid of the glinty sound the factory D'Addario's are giving me right now.

(I've got Fender Nickel Rounds on the Precision)

Still playing with the recorder. This is my Sun fretless 5 with the aguilar running in the MM series.

Nice tones! Can't wait for dakpluto's tribal to arrive now. It's like a bass explosion here. First there were 2 (Fender P and doublebass) and soon to be 4 with the 2 Traben additions! And I'm already GASsing for a Core! :hyper:

Your cleanup pictures remind me I should get go find some hangers and make some room down here. Yikes!

MK,

String retainer bars can be purchased from just about any guitar parts house. I got mine here: Link Removed

As far as installation goes, the key is to get through the finish without chipping the finish. A plexy glass bit works great for not chipping the finish. I use a hand drill. Be sure to put a depth marker on the bit so you don't go through.

Why are you putting one on?

Uh, you're not gonna like my answer...

Because I'm an engineer and something doesn't look right with the angle and I'm thinking improvement on tone. Couple that with having that button on my Fender's headstock and the steep angle on my doublebass and then seeing your mod...

To make matters worse I've never even thought of touching the Fender. I've had the Chaos less than a week and I'm ready to tweak it.

Dark,

Your right, the reality is though that if he does it, it wont hurt a thing. The physics really say, the steeper the break angle the better, hence through body strings. The bar will increase that angle but will most likly do nothing or little for the tone unless it is currently buzzing.

MK, Did you change your strings and do a setup?

Actually, too much of an angle is bad for the strings, and tilted headstocks are desigened to be at the perfect angle for the strings.

Through body stringing is a whole different story.

Dark, actually they arn't completely different.

As I understand it, an optimum (or at least consistent) break angle contributes tonally. The idea being, a good “high” or “strong” break angle over a nut or saddle ensures that the string makes tight contact, which can give a stronger, more vibrant tone. String -Trough body and string retainers help with this. A string with no break angle can buzz because it actually bounces up and down against the saddle as it vibrates. Strings with slight break angles can sound dull because they bear so lightly on the saddle that string vibrations aren't transmitted efficiently.

The string through body also contributes to percieved tension, since the string is longer overall. The quality and friction coefficent of the bridge saddle play a significant role in the effectivness of this.

Optimum, yes, which is what the headstock angle is set to, 13 degrees, for what its worth.

Too much angle at the nut, and the strings wont sit in their slots right, and cause issue, buzzing and weak tone, espcially the heavier strings, B & E...

All that stuff about the saddles has no bearing on what the angle at the nut should be.
