Trade 73 jazz for 68 pbass refin

Just trying to get some advice if trading my 73 jazz bass for a 68 pbass refin is a fair deal? The jazz has the pots changed but is original paint. The pbass has been refinished in red and has a new pick guard.
The pbass comes with original pickups also. pots on pbass are also original dating 66.


Im more of a p guy but don’t want to be taken . Thanks

I'm not a big fan of trades, someone usually gets the short end, in this instance I might make a exception. A correction pg and installing the original pickup would make that Precision really tempting.

This to me is just a TV logo era P, and then a refin and non original guard.... Have you priced original pickguards? A straight trade wouldn't be worth it to me. But also, I like J's way more than P's, so I wouldn't do it anyway

An original paint bass will always be more desirable. The paint job on the precision looks pretty nasty. Keep the J.

Value-wise, the '68 P has the edge - with original pickups (not installed) and pots (yes- '66 pots appeared into the 70s)
I'd be tempted to do it, but I prefer my 60s Js over the 70s.
Downside is it's not best refin... IMO it would look a lot better with a vintage/celluloid tort.

On the other hand, you know what you've got with your J; early 70s with 4-bolt neck.

Value wise, the Jazz has a slight edge with the original finish, and Jazz basses are generally priced higher. Also, a bird in the hand ...

I like the sound of P’s better too — but yours has mojo in all the right places (people pay for relic finishes like that). That P doesn’t look so hot to me. I wouldn’t do it.

‘73 - ‘74 J are special. Your is yours and you know what you have, and how you got it.

If you want to play a P, buy a P. When you realize the J is better, you’ll still have a sweet one with that somewhat rare “U” neck.

Play them both and stay with the one that feels and sounds better. At the end of the day, a cooler paint job will only get you so far, but good tone and a great feel makes all the difference.

Not a good deal for you. Don’t do it. Your J is worth more and it’s in better condition. Sell and buy an unmolested late 60’s to early 70’s P.

P bass appears to have old original Dimarzios which are just as desirable as the original Fenders ....If the weight is good then do it....I bet it sounds and feels real nice.

Keep the Jazzy.
Although I did trade a newer Jazz bass for an slightly older P they both were in great shape.
The P looks a lil narly to me.

That P is filthy and seriously modded. Unless your in a punk band or hate the sound of the J, stay away.
