Traynor YBA300

with a 12au7 as the tube driver, this should have good clean headroom.

the amp will also support using 6L6 instead of RL34, which may or may not change "cleanliness."

Curious that the owners manual shows a 4/8 ohm switch, but indicates in the specs section that it is 2/4 ohm switchable, and has 2 ohm minimum impedance...wonder which is right?

Interesting... I wonder if it will be like the yba200-2. 4/8 ohm switchable but can handle a 2 ohm load.
 
Right now I'm sitting on the fence between the Traynor and the Peavey VB-3. So.... I'm waiting to try out the YBA300 and do the ole pros & cons. Rezdog

You will find that the VB3 will cost you $500.00 more than the YBA300. Although the VB3 is 20 lbs lighter which is very attractive, the service ability and support of the YBA300 by Yorkville and L&M far exceeds what Peavey can offer and is more important to me than the 20 lb weight advantage of the VB3.

FYI, The first run of 50 units are shipping this week on Feb 10/11 and should be in the local L&M stores by Valentine's day.

For all this, I think I'll keep my 400+. For the record, it's 400 watts into 4 or 8 ohms, and 500 into 2 ohms.
One nice thing about using 6550's in a power section is that you can get them up to 200 watts per tube, but that's at 5% distortion, and you also need the transformers to keep up. I want to see an amp maker come up with one that runs 8 6550's at 800 watts RMS. Now that would be a beast of an amp. I think KT88's would be ok for that power rating as well.

I'm confused by this statement.
IIRC the Mesa Bass 400+ only does 6L6GC tubes. This is an inherent limitation of the power supply in the amp. It can only put out so much current/voltage, so it is not gonna be happy running 6550 tubes. Also, from what I gather , best case scenario, 400+ does 350 watts. On bone stock mesa tubes this is closer to 300 watts. And the wattage should be identical regardless of 8-4-2 ohm load. I have the 400 no plus which runs 6550 tubes just fine. It gets about 180 watts on 6L6, 250 on 6550. So thats closer to 75 watts per pair of 6550 tubes vs 60 watts per pair of 6L6GC tubes.

200 watts per tube?!? Aren't they usually used around 35-50?
 
Given proper plate voltage and biased correctly, 6L6's put out about 25 watts; KT88's about 50.

EL34's/6CA7's are in the latter category as well. From what I gather they aren't often utilized in this higher power capacity due to varying levels of quality among the differeing builders. One brands tube woudl do 35 watts fine, another could do 45, the third maybe 50. Of course there is always the YBA1a 90watts sine wave off of 2 EL34s.
