That could be the explanation why they chose 12 tubes. Lower plate voltages (possibly safer?), full output when tubes are biased cold (longer tube life) AND the ability to get full power with 6L6s (more choice).

As I said before, the Sadowsky SA200 gets 210-220 watts out of six EL-34 and the Peavey vb2 gets 225, and can actually get 300 if you use the right tubes and bias them hot. But I think those amps use pretty high plate volageas as well.

I'm not sure if you're referring to my post, as I'm one of the few who has mentiond the YBA-200 transformers in this thread.

I certainly didn't say, or meant to imply, that the transformers were a problem in terms of reliability. Only that the transformers limit the output before you can get the full output of the powertubes. "Undertrannied" as they say.

One nice thing about using 6550's in a power section is that you can get them up to 200 watts per tube, but that's at 5% distortion, and you also need the transformers to keep up. I want to see an amp maker come up with one that runs 8 6550's at 800 watts RMS. Now that would be a beast of an amp. I think KT88's would be ok for that power rating as well.

Where did you learn your tube tech?

Also, how often do you plan on replacing 6550s?

Yes, with a simple re-biasing of the amp, using the built-in bias... checker and the LED's, one can swap out the entire set for 6L6's instead, dramatically altering it's voicing to a more tighter and modern (as opposed to looser vintage) tone. If you do this and decide to keep it that way, then flip the plate over so it matches what is installed and you will always have the reminder of which tubes you are using.
