Tribute G&L Fallout Bass

Have just looked it up on the G and L website and it says parallel/split/OMG modes so from that it sounds like one of the modes is in fact split coil like a P bass and not single coil

The term 'split' is open to interpretation.

I think that it means just one of the two coils, and each coil spans all of the strings, so it's not like a regular P split pickup, instead like a Gibson guitar humbucker, or any other brand which uses that methodology.

The two sections of a standard passive P split pickup are already wired in series by default, so how could we get a different wiring for each of two other modes, if that was our interpretation of 'split' ?

Thanks, to me through my modest practice setup the middle setting sounds more bitey, the down position is definitely Omg mode due to the high output.

Am I right in thinking parallel mode is like having 2 single coils on at the same time (like running both pickups on full on a jazz bass, just worry different spacing between the 2 pickups)?

The tone knob on my Tribute seems to only change a bit of mid frequencies. It's not like any tone control I have experienced. Live I can't hear much but even with headphones it barely makes a difference. Anybody else find this is the case with theirs?

My tone control works, but the tone variance is confined pretty much to the last 30 degrees or so of rotation. This is pretty typical behavior of a pot with a non-linear taper. You could fix that by changing out the tone pot to one with a linear taper.

If it is a simple treble cut control, I leave it wide open as a rule, so how that one behaves would not worry me.

In fact, for my Franken-Ric 4001, I removed all of the the other controls, leaving just a single volume and the pickup switch.

Tone variances are achieved by adjusting my playing technique and position, along with the switch.

Sorry, can't give you a number, but my G&L Fallout Tribute (made in Indonesia) is by far the heaviest short-scale bass I own. It's a beast, but it's well-balanced - no neck dive to speak of.

I just leave the tone pot wide open, too, but I do that on all my basses.

Well, you've got decreasing volume going on there. Pluck the string repeatedly while rotating the tone control once all the way in one direction and then all the way back in the other direction. Sorry, I don't have any decent recording equipment and I don't have a Dropbox account, so can't demo.

Dumb question perhaps, but I've often wondered what the "fallout" part of the name means. Is it a reference to something, or some slang that geriatrics like me aren't up on?

G&L makes a full scale bass called a Kiloton, which is a unit of explosive power as in a bomb, and another name for a bomb. The Fallout has the exact same feature as the Kiloton but is a short scale.. so it's the "fallout" from the "kiloton". I guess they could have called it Kiloton Jr.

Yes. I have D'Addario 45/100 flatwound "Chromes" (ECB81S) on mine.

Mine turned out to be defective. It was covered under warranty. I assume they put in a new pot, but whatever they did, it worked like you would expect a normal tone control to work after the repair.

I too have noticed that the tone pot does not seem to do much on my tribute. Has anyone tried to modify with a treble and bass nob like what you find on an L-1000? I wonder if that would be a worthwhile upgrade.
