Finally got this SQ Bullet back together. It's wired straight to jack right now while I work-out the electronics. It's an ugly duckling for sure but it sure sounds good.

Now that the neck is settled-in(it was apart for a couple years) I got the set-up dialed and this thing is an 8lb beast. It sounds so good wired straight to jack, I thought the single coils would be really harsh but that's not the case.
Add me if you can. I have a Squire Vintage MODIFIED Jaguar BASS THAT i BOUGHT about 6 months ago. Heres what I did to it. Started out with a Pro Setup by me. (Im a Guitar and Bass Repair and Setup Man.) I put on some Duncan P and J Quartet Pounder Pups, a Hipshot Bridge, Di Addario Chrome , and a lot of love. I love this bass

The pic quality does`t do it justice (IMO) - even using the excellent advice from Fender32 in the sticky, I find it hard to get a good likeness of shiny black stuff. Here's a list of mod's:

The `Duncan Designed`pick-ups sound too good to change (IMO, for now). The tape-wounds are brighter than expected, given what I did with the tone cap - and you can bend them into the middle next week.
I might do a Tusq XL nut sometime. I also have screw terminals for easy swapping of the control panel and I`m building a 250K pot version to try.

- Push-pull series/parallel pickup switch on the tone pot
- 0.1 uF tone cap

- Neutrik M-series jack (Switchcraft doesn`t make a black one)
- D`addario XL tape-wounds
- Hipshot BT7 extender (E)
- Hipshot HB7 tuners (ADG)
- Black strap-locks, string retainer, PG screws, knobs
And here`s a shot of the back of the head-stock:

This is REALLY nice. I'm hoping to black out the rest of my squier as well. I just stripped it down to the natural finish too. Hopefully in the next year or so I'll be able to afford the rest of the hardware like the tuners and bridge.
Thanks gregmon79. And that`s an interesting looking piece of wood in that P-bass body. From the pic, it looks like it might be cross-grain from the usual orientation - gives it a nice sort-of a natural two-tone effect. Looks good now - will even better with some more black hardware

Indeed, that's what everyone keeps saying about the grain. Very unique looking. I like it and I know it'll look even better with all blacked out hardware. Thanks for the inspiration and sort of preview what mine would look like. The black beauties add that extra touch. Niceness.

Ya know, I've never really liked the black block markers on a maple 'board, but with the black hardware and strings and the natural body, it really looks great!
Squier VM Precision 5:
Bourns full size pots (loving the taper!)
"Push-back" cloth wiring
NOS Sprague VQ paper in oil .047 cap
'08 American Standard pickups
Switchcraft jack
DR NPS Lo-Riders 45-125
Might replace the tuners if there's a direct drop in for something lighter, but they work well so it's not a huge priority.

Hello, I just stumbled upon this thread. I am in the process of refubing and improving my old squier II. I will soon be in! Heres the thread for those interested. I'd think it's just squiers, hence the thread title. What do you mean by "cheaper fender style"?
Yes, basically. SX, Roytek, Soundstation, chinese stuff, etc. I ask because i do like tricking out cheap basses, but haven't ever had a Squier yet.
I say let's keep it squiers. People might show their modded staggs before you know it

But I could recommend a Squier. Standard series and up in my book. I myself are not a fan of the Affinity series. They have gotten cheaper over the years. I think that the 'backed by Fender' gives it a little more 'jois de vivre'. But mainly because measurements are mostly spot on except for the holes for the pickguard. Neck pocket and bridge placements are god as well.
