I just picked up a Chris Aiken Squier and I'm interested in adding a tone control and dropping in a Steve Harris Duncan pickup. I know nothing about the electronics of basses. If I'm going to bring this to my repair guy I want to make sure I have everything he needs. So other than the pickups and a tone pot and knob, what else would I need? Would the volume pot also need to be upgraded, what tone and volume pots would you suggest? I see there are some electronics kits available that come with volume and tone pots, orange drop capacitors, switch craft jacks and wiring, but the prices range from under $10 to over $40 which tells me that some kits are better than others. Can anyone recommend a quality kit? Thanks!

Those kits are OK but I would suggest getting the loose stuff from 1 retailer. I would go for CTS pots. With pots you should mind the taper (linear or logarithmic). And the shafts. It will be smooth or ribbed depending on your knobs. Being it's a Squier you probably need ribbed. If you need new knobs than you have to make sure that your knobs and shafts of your pots match. Go for Sprague Orange Drop cap. They are cheap and sound good. I would also go for a Switchcraft jack to complement the bass.
For the values/rating of the parts go to Seymour Duncan's website. There is a section with a plethora of schematics. You just have to select your setup (1 pickup, volume/tone).
Where are you located? If in Europe then I have got all the parts you need. I could hook you up for muchos cheapos. I need to clean up shop.
This P bass sounds AMAZING. Love this thing. Like I said earlier in this thread, but for those who didn't catch it, it started life as an Affinity that I paid $55 bucks for. New, electronics, bridge, neck, hardware, pg and this is what I've got.

I am applying for a number. The Squier below was purchased with the trick parts already there. It has hip shot tuners, bad ass II bridge, new pup (don't know the brand) and a new pearloid pickguard. It was purchased here on TB. It is a MIJ medium scale from the 80s. The Lakland pictured with the Squier is also medium scale.

21 fret neck required the bridge to be moved up 1/2" causes that geddy grind 70s spacing
& replaced with lighter smaller spaced bridge
Needs string tree but it's fine now & lpb nail polish cover up those holes

Chuck, is that a G & L neck? Those are the best... I played my TOS Jazz with a G & L ASAT neck again yesterday in band practice and it was darn near perfect. If I only could play as well as how it sounds.

My Affinity P Bass.
Mods include:
- Babicz bridge
- New knobs
- New pickguard
- New string tree (or whatever it's called!)
New pickups are on the way. I had bought new black machine heads but didn't realise that on the Affinity headstock, the holes aren't big enough. Oops. A new neck beckons....

I've not changed the pickups yet - I'm intending to change them for a set of Di Marzio P DP 122's or some Seymour Duncan's. The String Tree is going to have to revert to the original silver one. I swapped it for a black one when I intended to change the machineheads to all black, but that project died a death when I bottled out on drilling the holes in the headstock out.
Ive had my Chris Aiken for a month and I love it!!! Added a tone knob, pearloid pick guard and BA II bridge. Never been a P Bass guy, but I love it!!! Great bass for the money. A $300 bass that looks and feels like a $1000 Fender!
