It has a level control that gives you the ability to set your volume just fine. The "problem" being referenced is the boost switch (right-side switch on the pedal), which has a little more oomph than is preferable.
I run my RB as an always on dirt (with my level set appropriately), but never use the boost switch.

It's just a lot of boost. Not to the "blowing speakers" degree, but the volume control gives you the chance to dial in really well as it is, so a good amount of boost like the second switch provides is just more than preferable (in my personal experience).
what he said. it's about double as much as i'd want for a "lead tone" setting. i just never use the bugger.

Dunno what y'all's talkin' 'bout. I love the Boost footswitch..it adds a gritty shazam to the dynamics, very thick and articulate!
I use my Rusty Box at the beginning of my chain and use the Boost to push other pedals- fuzz and especially filters. Works really well for that. I do agree that a second volume control would make it even more versatile/useable though...
it's a great idea, but if there was a separate gain/volume structure control for the boost instead of it being fixed i would be a happy little clam.

i think Erukakakakakakaka talked to them about that, they weren't into it. there IS a way to change the boost level internally (i think it's on a page or two ago, Eric! posted it), but i'm gonna wait till i have another one to play with that.

Doesn't have to be internally! Slap a potentiometer on there instead, drill a hole, WHAMMY, alterable boost!
I thought about asking them about a tone bypass mod, too. I LOVE the gain structure.
The boost function sounds great, but I've been keeping it off..
Kinda hard to stop playing and turn the volume down to keep it level with the un-boosted signal.
I'm gonna pull a behndito and wait til I have two to start messing around with the guts..
All in all, this pedal is amazing. The boost does what it's supposed to, it's just a bit much for my personal liking, unless I have it always on for whatever it is I'm working on.

I'm interested in this too but I'd prolly have to pay someone to do it for me... I have no skills when it comes to these things.
i feel you. outside of building cables, i don't do a lot of soldering. adjusting an internal trimpot IS super easy though. just take the back off and use a really thin screw driver to turn what looks like a solid plastic shaft (SHAFT!!) with a screw top. easy peasy.
I don't know for sure, but it sounds like the Boost might just be a gain boost early in the circuitry before the clipping section. The problem with this is the mod quoted by Eric! would basically just be cutting the added gain (and with it, the volume) of the Boost element rather than keeping the added gain and lowering the overall volume to compensate. In order to keep the boosted gain but with a control-able volume on the Boost circuit, it seems like it would be necessary to add a second volume control at the end of the circuit in series with the existing Volume control that would be switched in only when the boost footswitch was hit.
FYI- this is just based on my feeling of how the boost circuit works based on how it sounds to my ears. I haven't looked at the guts myself, but if I am right, it seems like this may or may not be possible depending on how much is going on with the current Boost switch. Adding a second volume control in itself would be super easy, but having it switch in and out with the Boost could be tougher (or might be super easy also!)...
