Trouble with a custom build

The repairs would probably be less than shipping it back. I'd feel like a bit of a jerk doing that to a smallish builder. If the dude covers the cost of the fix I'd just shrug it off and move on with my life. I'm hoping he steps up.

What do you think? No mercy, if it doesn't rock back in the box and see what CC company will do? Suck it up and eat a repair bill on a new build?

For me, having a custom build sent with the bridge placed so poorly that the instrument can't intonate means it's getting sent back and I'm getting a refund.

There's a certain cache that goes with paying for a custom build, and someone who can't put a bridge in the right spot probably shouldn't be in business as a custom builder.

Looks and feel are spot on fine. Got what I wanted happy on those fronts. The issue is inability to intonate and goofy inlay / position.

And a poorly seated nut. Those are a lot of issues for a bass you seem to have spent quit a chunk of income on.

At this point nothing would really surprise me but anything that invasive would significantly impair my chance at a refund or chargeback. If worse comes to worse there will be a brutally honest post mortem.

I am starting to feel bad about the mean things I said about Gibson.

Given the previous ability to do a good job and the many issues with this instrument, I'd fear "life issues", if you know what I mean. I'd hit up the credit card company ASAP so you don't hit 30 day limit. Get some pressure going from their side to help ensure you'll get your money back. This is refund territory, not repair territory. You paid good money, you should get a great instrument not a headache.

Definitely. I'm a little limited with mobile here. As you may know to start a chargeback I will have to provide dates of last contact, when payments were made, what dates and amounts and other data points. I can't just call visa and say "bass bad give money"

Do you have any pics of the bass? Just curious as to what you had built. We don't need to see the headstock.

I would. One of the very few things I really don't like about TB is willingness to go all Internet mob on someone within an hour of a problem being posted. It's really not OK.

OP, I gather your point was to simply find out if you have a legit problem. You do. Nuke this thread and get it resolved and then come back and tell us about it.

I fully agree - people who are thinking of having a custom bass built by this builder should know he is so they don't make the same mistake.

Johnithen - you may find the bass acceptable (needing a major fix), but I certainly wouldn't, and I doubt others would either after reading this thread. Don't you think people at the largest bass guitar website on the internet should be warned?
