True 3-way fEARful bass enclosures

fEARless retains it's value? I haven't really been looking at their prices but fEARful cabinets are all given away, usually after several months too.

I think it depends on how good the build looks, what kind of pictures you take, and how well your sale thread is written. I have sold three fEARful cabs. A 15/6 I got used, sold it for what I paid for it. Two 12/6/1's that I got 75% of new AB build price.

YMMV.

No need for you to buy in the dark... just down the road from you is:

Yeah hes close for sure. If I hit some superbowl squares I was calling him for sure. Maybe next year!

I'll take the Pats superbowl though.

Now that I'm sure I wont be using them for subs I'll place more importance on form factor. The GK NEO 412 is getting tough to move! Especially in this non stop snow

I'm glad I found this thread. I was beginning to think I was the only one who thought the mids were very peaky on my 15/6.

So, is there a T3W equivalent for a fEARful cab without a HF driver? I'd love to tame some of the nastiness from the mid driver.

Would I be better off looking into an L-Pad solution for the mid driver, or installing a HF driver with a pad and the T3W crossover?

Do you have the standard -3db pad installed already?

Not officially. Although before the T3W 15/6/1, sclift came up with a notch filter for the ~4 kHz midrange resonant peak. I used that for a while before installing the T3W; however the T3W sounds better, IMO. In my experience, it is not simply a matter of padding back the 6Nx410, as that lowers its output everywhere instead of just eliminating the peak. The notch filter would work on a 2-way design.

Details for the 6Nx410 notch filter can be found here: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

You gotta add a tweet to do the True 3-Way... because [wait for it]... its a 3-way.

You are crossing out of [low pass filtering] the mid so low that useful and expected content for almost all bass playing styles and tonal palates will disappear without the tweet.

Do the T3W.

BTW you already have an Lpad - that's what the resistor array is on your mid xover board. The problem isn't insufficient padding its the dust cap resonating... you can see it on an impedance sweep - cut the dust cap off and it goes away. The solution is to not use the driver in that frequency range but if you do that, you need to add a tweet.

Of course you could use a different mid driver [which is what Dave did in the his fearless series] but then you have re-design for that driver's foibles.

mmm .. Mine has the V Vibe switch. Which is 3 way or two way.. From what i understand the two way is fullrange into 15 then HP into the tweet.. I thought the 3 way was , well.. a 3 way...

Can probably think of It as a 2.5 way of sorts. Lpf on the top of the woofer, hpf on the bottom of the mid, no filter on the top of the mid, and hpf on the bottom of the tweet. The switch probably removes the woofer/mid filters and the mid driver from the circuit and runs it like a typical bass cab with the woofer getting a fullrange signal with it's topend rolling off naturally wherever it does, with the tweeter grafted on top with a 3.5 or 5k hpf.

The T3W would be a more "elegant" solution and turn it into a "full fullrange" cab.

If you've no use for a tweeter/don't want to buy one, the notch filter will tame the harshness and cost a good bit less.

A variety of 2 and 3-way crossover types are used in bass enclosures. Most commercial 2-way and 3-way designs just add a horn with a simple high pass filter, allowing the woofer/midrange to run full range, which can lead to ragged frequency response. The true 3-way fEARful employs a carefully designed low pass filter on the midrange driver to ensure a smooth transition between the midrange and the horn and a reasonably flat response across the spectrum. People like Duke LeJeune go even further with crossover design, adding various tweaks to tune the system for a more pleasing overall sound.

For those who seek a relatively flat, balanced, sound, with good on and off-axis response, the T3W fEARful is definitely superior, both subjectively and objectively. In my experience, the new crossover elevates the design into a different class. However, some might prefer the more aggressive sound of the 6Nx410 run wide open.

I don't have a problem with the original crossover, mainly because I have significant roll off before the mid gets hairy for some people. Many players who attenuate the treble range won't find a problem with the original design.
