True 3-way fEARful bass enclosures

My take of the fEARful vs FEARLESS lines. fEARfuls are the originals, they are excellent cabs. FEARLESS's are built on the success of the fEARful line, and have a more refined sound, a more technically and sonically advanced design because, well, they are a newer design. Why design the same thing again? The FEARLESS line are all three-way designs, and offer no subs either. From what I have read here and on the GB forums, the original fEARful line offers slightly deeper response. Unless you are playing down to F#0, it's certainly possible that one may not be able to tell the difference. Not everyone needs tor wants that deep anyway.

YMMV. We all perceive sound differently.

Does the new True cross bridge the gap & make them very close now?

I understand they have different mid drivers but the premise is still the same... low passing the mid better than the GBG cross did.

You are assuming that low passing the mid is an upgrade, in the case of the fEARful plans using the 18sound mid, it maybe for some. For others it may not be. A different mid driver will have different requirements, and will meet different tonal goals.

If this new cross does the same things as well as the FearLESS line to improve on the FearFULL line, I'd be willing to give FearFULL another look after the initial mediocre reviews... due to the CBG

You are still assuming they two different lines need the same thing. They dont. They are different goals. What you are asking is along the lines of, "Will these halogen bulbs that are an "upgrade" on my honda be an upgrade on my dodge?"

Theoretically the Fearless line should be an upgrade \ more refined version of the Fearful line.

Having sat down with a 12/6/1, a F112, and a Bassic 12, I can tell you they are all different, and I walked out of there with a pair of 12/6/1's.

How different can they really be using the same woofer & same horn? Unless the mid driver & cross are THAT much more improved... but the T3W is solving that so we are down to the difference in box size & mid driver.

I wouldnt call the t3w an improvement. It is a different design goal. A lot of the tonality is covered by the mid driver. The low end character is controlled by the porting and cab size. Since both of those are different, you get a different sound. The cross overs are the icing, and while they can change some stuff, they can only shape so much.

I'm looking into them to double as sub duty for kick drums so I'm just trying to get an idea of how different that low end is with numbers.

Honestly I dont think cabs with mid drivers are for you. If you didnt care for a fEARful, regardless of which cross over is in it, then I dont think you will like the fEARless line, and probably not greenboys line of cabs using full range speakers. There are a lot of guys on this forum that dont want to hear mids, thats ok. There are a lot of guys here that dont want lows too, and others that just want to play low mid guitar tones with nothing over 2k, and nothing below 100hz.

Just different goals.

Look at it this way, you didnt previously want the low end content in your bass rig right? but now you want to double on kick? That is going to require you to shape the signal from both sources differently if you want to keep the tonality you have now. Doing so would probably require some level of DSP or something else. With that in line it wouldnt matter what cross over you use, because you could adjust it.

A-ing and B-ing cabs is often a fruitless endeavor. Just because one can detect differences between A and B, does not mean the difference makes that cab better (or worse). Different is different, but still may be good. And Ginger's not Ginger anymore, she's Mary Ann.

This is fair. I'm just trying to kill 2 birds with one stone. Appreciate the responses! Id love some more low end extension past my GK NEO 115s, they are very tight in the lows & dont go that deep by nature

The way I see it, the big disadvantage of Greenboy designs is the manufacturing and distribution chain. With boutique builders, those functions are usually the same guy, and even with Acme. But either way, it is difficult to demo them. Not everyone is in the position to take a road trip to an AB, or to visit an owner of those cabs. It's a tough way to sell cabs, and not practical for most bassists. One thing I have seen with some of the boutique builders, and even some of the more mainstream builders who sell direct, is some of them build up an inventory and getting a cab is fairly quick. Many also offer a two week trial period to take the risk out of the equation. While I am a Greenboy enthusiast, I feel the average bassist may feel it is too risky to plunk down that much money on a cab unheard, and not be able to return it (unless that has changed). For the DIY crowd buiding a fEARful, well we all know it is a calculated gamble, DIY'ers and Makers thrive on that, and it usually works out just fine.

For those who seek a relatively flat, balanced, sound, with good on and off-axis response, the T3W fEARful is definitely superior, both subjectively and objectively. In my experience, the new crossover elevates the design into a different class. However, some might prefer the more aggressive sound of the 6Nx410 run wide open.

@Coolhandjjl,... great post! i just ordered an F115 sight unseen and totally unheard. why did i do it? because of the resale market. if it doesn't suit my needs i believe it will move at a tolerable lost.
I believe that is their most popular cab! I built a pair of 15/6 Tubes several years back. It simply proved that the old adage of 10's sound must like this, 18's have to sound like that, etc, is no longer true with modern drivers and expert cab engineering.

If ruler flat response is the goal and you are using the 18sound mid, then yes the true three way smooths the response. I would not consider the fEARless line directly superior to the fEARful line, nor would I consider the T3W superior to the CBG or fEARless lines.

They are different goals. It is ok to have different goals.

fEARless retains it's value? I haven't really been looking at their prices but fEARful cabinets are all given away, usually after several months too.
