Trumpet rock

Yes, I'm perfectly aware this mirrors the other thread I started two or three weeks ago:

Anyway, continuing on from this last thread, I'm starting (or attempting to start) a jazzy rock band at my music uni, but I am actually enrolled in jazz trumpet, not bass. I'm going to do bass next year. The point is, since I don't really want to be playing jazz to small crowds for the rest of my life, I want to put my trumpet skills to use.

So does anyone know any rock bands which have used this instrument. Fusion and funk is also good, so if you have any suggestions in that field than give suggestions for that too. A trumpet at the forefront would be quite nice.

I'll be starting another thread about trumpet player which use effects: I am also a guitar player, so I have effects pedals which could make some interesting sounds when combined with the trumpet.

Jazzy rock then, dude! I guess you don't have many suggestions then?

Why are the confounded saxes allowed to be in rock, hmmm?

I bet the Beatles must've used this underused-in-rock instrument at some stage, right? Someone help me out here!

Cake uses quite a bit of trumpet.

BTW I play in a classic rock/blues band. We have a multi-instrumentalist who plays harmonica, percussion and trumpet. The trumpet really adds a nice touch to the songs he uses it on. Especially helps fill in during leads since we just have one guitar player.

There are many Beatles tunes which include a trumpet.

Oh Zappa! Blood Sweat and Tears! Knew I was forgetting people. Thanks for all the quick replies guys... I'll read some more in the morning - I live in Australia, and I should've been in bed two hours ago, but being in uni automatically gets me into bad sleeping habits...

I have been playing bass for about 37 years, but trumpet was my major in college. During the 70's (I know I'm dating myself), there were many "jazz/rock/funk" things happening. For some old school learnin', I suggest checking out Chase, Maynard Ferguson, early Chicago, and Miles Davis's 70's-80's work. Oh yeah, Don Ellis as well.
Right now, I am experimenting putting my horn through a Yamaha "Silent Brass" system and adding effects.
With respect to the above posters, don't limit yourself to the mainstream recordings that use the trumpet as a supporting instrument (most top 40).

Check out Tower of Power. Also just learn the music and make connections in that scene. Even if there aren't any trumpet players in it, you can carve a niche. I'd find a sax buddy to pair up with and get good at creating parts for songs together. I'm sure a lot of bands would appreciate that kind of thing.

As a matter of fact I DO know a sax player who is into this kind of stuff, and he uses effects as well! We are going to jam together after our tests have finished.

I have checked out Tower of Power and I absolutely ADORE what I have heard. First checked them out because of Rocco. Good taste.

Don Ellis is also a trumpeter I have heard of, but haven't listened to. Same with Chicago. I shall do so shortly. Thanks for all these brilliant suggestions everyone! Keep them coming. Unfortunately I really should be sleeping now so I'll reply first thing in the morning.
