"Truthers" and 9/11

When I was an undergrad a group of truthers and 9/11 conspiracy nuts had an open debate about what they called "the truth behind Bush's lies." They were ripped to shreds by the engineering, political science, and philosophy students and faculty, as well as everyone else who was against them.
If you're looking for me to fling my carrot your way, eric, I wouldn't hold my breath.
After having read 4 pages of posts I've come to a few questions - why, if the official version is the gospel truth, are there even any "truthers"? Why do they doubt? Are they mentally challenged, as conventional wisdom seems to say, or is there more to it than that? Billions of people believe various religious tenets, yet there is scant evidence that any of it happened, probably less evidence than the "truthers" purport for 9/11. I'm not staking a position for myself one way or another, just trying to understand this human phenomenom a bit better. And please don't say "they're just a bunch of fools" or whatever, thats just too simplistic. I've read their claims, and a lot of it seems a bit farfetched, but do they know something we don't?

One of the leading voices in the "truthers" movement is Dr. David Ray Griffin. His PhD is in philosophical theology. Makes sense.
If I told you, I'd have to............well............you know. You should have never mentioned the "I" word. The answer can be found on a map of Washington DC, or 20 dollar bill.
... and they're just a bunch of fools. Read the link to the ASCE/FEMA paper in an earlier post if you want a rational explanation of why WTC 7 came down. It's written by a structural engineer rather than a philosophical theologist. He is reporting from a group of people who are in the profession of designing such structures and actually investigated the reasons, rather than just declaring other peoples' work as "irrelevant," which seems to be the best the truthers can do.
You could ask the same of a whole host of conspiracy theorists (and these groups no doubt overlap to at least some degree): Holocaust deniers, those who believe in the Illuminati, moon landing doubters, "grassy knoll" types, etc.

This is the question that gives me no peace, especially when I see people I know go crazy about this stuff.

Absolutely not -- and that's the troubling thing. Their arguments and "facts" dissolve into nothing when examined fairly or even approached with "reasonable man" logic. Their lack of reason or honesty is truly remarkable.
Distinct psychiatric illness is a bit far fetched, IMO. Being sucked in the same way religious people are, for example, comes from the same sort of feeling, IMO. Gov't black ops helicopters are so far fetched, but 2000 years ago, a baby was born a virgin birth to show you the way to heaven? Both seem a bit crazy to me, but one is accepted as truth, and the other is nonsense. At least black helicopters exist, whether or not their up to no good.
Having both been at one time obsessed with "conspiracies" and having family that is obsessed with religion, both run pretty similar paths.
I'm not sure you can paint the Kennedy Assassination the same color, but I agree with the sentiment of your post.
I think that these sort of things are a natural outgrowth of skepticism, but being a skeptic for the sake of it doesn't do anyone any good. In that light, I think that someone with a Phd. in Philosophical Theology is certainly a good candidate for a viable alternative outlook, but not without a solid grounding in the facts.
For example, you could have a unique theory of human evolution, but you would probably want to make sure that its an African-centric one, as all the evidence points toward that as the starting place for mankind.
Ok, ok. Most of these conspiracy theories are not "9/11 was an inside job"-based, but rather "There's something we aren't being told, some of this sounds a bit fishy"-based.
Most of the theories I've heard or read about have been of the "inside job" variety.
like the people with bumper stickers that say " 9-11 was an inside job" for example.
