Conspiracism is a cultlike experience, for certain, and lots of impressionable people are dragged in somewhat innocently and unwittingly, and eventually get over it when they are exposed to more rational views.Distinct psychiatric illness is a bit far fetched, IMO. Being sucked in the same way religious people are, for example, comes from the same sort of feeling, IMO.
That's not what I'm talking about so much as people who are compulsive conspiracists, and I know them. Their behavior and outlook and suspension of disbelief toward virtually any conspiracy theory, however ridiculous, is obviously attributable to some pathology. It's an extraordinarily creepy thing to observe.
