Last time I tuned up, I took a photo of the tuning pegs in the "correct" position. Now I just make sure they line up like the photo, so I'm good to go.
I guess it depends on "your" bass but I never have to retune my basses before the end of a gig. I will check the tuning at some point but it's always good.
