The DSP is more than just selective EQ enhancement. A 24-bit processor analyzes the incoming signal and intelligently applies specific filters, making subtle real-time adjustments to the crossover, compressor/limiter, three discrete class D amplifier channels and more.
This suggests that the crossover frequencies may shift in response to changes in the program material. If the HF horn crossover is little too low during a transient, it could easily lead to distortion in the form of a little crackle. The distortion could possibly be caused by clipping in the signal path, or the result of pushing the MF or HF drivers too hard. This could be related to a shifting crossover frequency or perhaps the compressor/limiters are too slow to engage.
I don't know the answer, but it seems that enough people are having the problem that it should be considered a design flaw
Hmm … I think it's telling that they claim the crossovers are "active / passive", when we already know that the sub crossover is passive. I will remain suspicious until I can actually look inside the sub unit as well as the tower.
