Turbosound IP2000 Review

So I'm out guys, new unit, same issue for me. Listed it for sale already, thanks for all the help and support over the past month or so.....

Well, that's unfortunate. Moving on is the right thing to do for you.
Where have you listed the speakers for sale? Out of curiosity, are you selling them with full disclosure that you believe there is an issue with the speaker system?
 
Carefully... lol The hole has a threaded insert, and the hole isn't drilled all the the way through, about 9/16" deep, I believe the plywood used one the bass cabinet is 5/8 or 16mm... I am currently working on a detailed drawing, and may offer a few of the parts that is best to cnc machine, plus the threaded insert, kind of a diy project. The surround has to be made within tight specs in order for a very snug fit... and because of the lip on the column's top and bottom, it has to lock together as a two piece unit... Someone suggested using cables from the top of the column to the side handles, this will not work, yep I did try it...
 
Well I had yet another good night with my system. It was a larger function room with maybe 200 people. The band was a 10 piece band with 5 brass, singer, guitar, bass and drums. If you are from Mass you may have heard of the "B Street Bombers"' They have been around 39 years.

The interesting thing about the speakers was how they handled an over hang. About 1/3rd of the room had a drop ceiling. I walked under there a number of times and in the past with traditional speakers there was always a change in the sound. The Turbo's though seemed to cover the are just as well as the other part of the hall.

This time I had my main in on the Turbo's at +6 and I tried tweaking the channel input and punched it to +3.

No distortion and the system sounded great..

Yup. The Claddagh in Lawrence and the B Street Bombers have remained constant over the decades. Did you guys ever play Mr. C's Rock Palace? The good old days....

Wondering if you are funning bass and drums through them? I have in small rooms. In larger rooms I bring a coubple of 12" EV powered subs and run them as an aux fed. it helps me push my low end a bit more.

Yes, bass guitar, guitar, kick drum and 3 vocals... We have some much clear power, I ran the 12 channel mixer master lever at -10 db's ! Next gig will will put one of the ip-2000 speakers behind the band and the other in front, this way I believe we will eliminate all monitors... I am very impressed with this speaker system!

Hmmm....I'm not so sure I'd do that. Better to align both columns, whether they're forward, even with, or behind your front vocal mic line. I'm thinking that offsetting columns the way you describe could stand to introduce all kinds of phasing and cancellation problems UNLESS the stage space and audience space are literally not related to each other...which is hard to imagine. Maybe you could side fill for the stage sounds?

Perhaps an audio engineer could weigh in and shed some more light on this for us.

You may have a good point, ideally about mid way on the stage so we can use as monitors and mains, although not sure if that would introduce a feedback situation... If so then placing both speakers in the back may be fine. I am in two bands, and the other one they only use one ip2000, it a "Grateful Dead" type of band and worked very well.....

If you have vocal mics that are high-gain before feedback (audix, shure beta, etc.), and you stay on top of the mic, you might be ok depending on how loud you'd need to crank to fill the room (if speakers are located mid/rear of stage). I've seen this done successfully a few times. Worth a shot during a sound check and if no-go, have your plan B ready.

Yes, that is what I was thinking, so next gig we will definitely experiment around with speaker placement, I truly would like to eliminate the monitors, would make setup and running the mixer from the stage so much easier! I use a blue tooth wireless system on my bass amp, making it possible to go into the audience to check sound....
 
We all could hear everything... Worked out great...
On a couple of bigger shows (outside, deep wide stage) with contract sound, we pulled the sticks out of the truck and got them to run us a general floors send to the two Bose sticks several feet behind us on either side of the drummer... We all could hear including the drummer... Wasn't a tailored mix for anyone in particular, didn't need to be... Worked great...
 
Just like to address the IP2000 distortion issue again. Has anyone tried to disengage the tweeter to see if that cures the distortion?

The specs don't indicate the HF crossover point, and some HF would be lost, but it could determine whether the HF driver is faulty, or maybe even the HF electronics.
I would try this myself, but as my unit is only weeks old, it would negate any warranties. So, just putting it out there.

Has anyone whose IP2000 is out of warranty opened the unit to look inside? I recently saw a picture of a unit that had been opened and was surprised (as was the owner) to see that the subwoofer has a passive crossover network. I have been unable to find any meaningful specs relating to the crossovers in this system, so it makes me wonder if the HF tweeter is treated in the same way.

If it is a case of the HF driver being passively crossed over, then I feel this could explain the distortion being heard by some. On this and other forums, the distortion heard is often related to when a microphone is being used, and, ok when program music is played. This leads me to conjecture that if a low slope passive crossover is used on the HF tweeter, any microphone plosives will be below the filter cutoff and tweeter operating point, and will get through to the tweeter causing the distortion. On program music there are no such transients.

Now until we get a good look inside one of these units, this is just speculation. So if anyone is prepared to open theirs up and check it out, and maybe put up some pictures of the internals we'll just have to speculate.

It is a pity though, that such a great little unit can be let down by this intermittent inconvenience.

The DSP is more than just selective EQ enhancement. A 24-bit processor analyzes the incoming signal and intelligently applies specific filters, making subtle real-time adjustments to the crossover, compressor/limiter, three discrete class D amplifier channels and more.

This suggests that the crossover frequencies may shift in response to changes in the program material. If the HF horn crossover is little too low during a transient, it could easily lead to distortion in the form of a little crackle. The distortion could possibly be caused by clipping in the signal path, or the result of pushing the MF or HF drivers too hard. This could be related to a shifting crossover frequency or perhaps the compressor/limiters are too slow to engage.

I don't know the answer, but it seems that enough people are having the problem that it should be considered a design flaw.
