Turbosound IP2000 Review

Crackling is happening every time now. Even with mixer. I’ve changed input gain and output gain, eq at flat and below, only happens on microphones even though other instruments are much louder.
No clipping anywhere in the signal chain.

I’m beginning to think some units are just defective and some work fine. Hopefully turbosound can send me some decent ones as replacements.
 
They are v2s I searched all around until I could find someone who had them in stock. Had them shipped from a music store in Missouri to south Florida. I thought the v2 fixed this problem. It may be a problem with the towers and not the base unit (which may be the same v1 to v2)

There has been a deafening silence from Turbosound on this issue. They surely must be aware of it, but perhaps are hoping it will go away some how. For those people who haven't experience the problem, I'm wondering if they are running units with updated firmware. Perhaps Turbosound quietly fixed the problem without drawing attention to it, hoping to avoid returns of version 1 units which can't be upgraded with new firmware.

I spoke too soon. Today I found a Facebook page Turbosound iNSPIRE Users and people there are talking about their "crackling" experiences, even with recent iP2000 version 2 models. Still, can't find any word from Turbosound on the matter.

You appear to be very lucky with your setups and not have suffered these annoyances. Perhaps you could be kind enough to describe your setup in terms of input and output dB settings of the unit.
I have always run at 0dB input and output and 0 or +3dB on the sub setting. Although I don't have the "crackling" problem any more, due to having disconnected the tweeters, I feel that without them I'm missing some "air" at the top.

IMHO a good experiment would be to try a more robust tweeter to see if the problem is clipping in the signal path or if the tweeter just can't handle it. If it's found to be clipping or some other sort of distortion in the signal path, at least try running the master higher and dropping the input gain as suggested earlier

I believe I posted them earlier but...

main input is +5
Channel A input is +3
Sub is +3

I use a Mackie DL32r board and run the output anywhere from 3/4 to full out.

At rehearsal some times I use an inexpensive Alesis 8 channel mixer. Main out us at noon or lower.

Recently I was doing a sound gig outside with all 4 units. The rain came so we pit one pair on the covered stage just in front of the band. I would say the mike line was maybe 2 feet behind. I placed the other two units in a safe area. For the duration of the night I was dealing with random mid range sounding feedback. I ruled out the two monitors onstage so can only assume it was the close proximity to the singers mikes.

As a bass player I usually stand about three feet behind and about four or five feet to the right of one column and I can attest to the fact that there is a lot sound radiating to the rear of these things.
It is important that your foldback monitors are not to high and graphic eq'ed so that all that spill doesn't get into the microphones.
With care we can get quite high levels at front of house.

For the explanation, see attached and look at the chart for horizontal beam width and polar patterns. Since these speakers have no significant baffle width, the sound wraps around them well into the mids. This dispersion characteristic is typical of all small column arrays. I had to use massive amounts of mid band EQ with the pair of Bose L1s to control feedback. The L1s were placed in front of the band, but they were tight on the center and fairly close to the vocalists.

With a traditional speaker, the wider front baffle pushes the cutoff frequency where the sound wraps around the speaker down. The wider the baffle, the lower the cutoff.

My two ip2000 v2 subwoofer units are at music-tribe repair center in Vegas. I explained the problem in explicit detail and they had me send the sub units and not the towers. They said that all the signal processing is in the subs and they could fix the problem with that. They’ve been super helpful though. I expect them back tomorrow and I’ll report back Thursday after my next gig with them.

It would be good to know what they do to fix them, but I guess we'll never know.

I ran my pair over two gigs this weekend, and lo.... no problems, the crackle was gone. I followed Waznex's suggestion of gain staging and all is good so far.
They were driven pretty hard Friday night mixing a wild young band and remained totally clean, and then Saturday night with my band, which is much more subdued they were very hifi. I am happy.
Next gig I'm going to add an extra sub for just a bit more bottom end.
