Two Bass Players

Just got back from an impromptu jam session with another friend who plays bass. We had a drummer, two bass players, and a guitar. We had a really good time just jamming.

However, all of us were stumped to name a mainstream (or even obscure) band that had two bass players in it's original line up.

Can anyone name a few bands with two bass players?

Oh yeah, and a "reunion" band with all the dudes who played bass in it over 30 years doesn't count.

I saw John Paul Jones a few years ago when he was opening for King Crimson. He was simulbassing it with Nick Beggs.

Limp Bizkit did it... I have teh vid...
I think it was on woodstock, but I can't remember
And it might have only been for one song
Plus all teh guys like Wooten who do a bunch of that stuff
And I've heard a few people try it live, and it was horrid...
Made me kind of ashamed to look at it and say:
Oooh yeah
I play that :bassist:
But it can be done quite nicely
Even though I'm not quite the biggets Limp Bizkit fan, I love that vid
And this may not count, but I've played w/ some friends and we've had two bassists inc me an I liked it some times... Others not so much...
Point is its tricky but more power to ya
I've always wanted to try that

I also hear of a funk band with two bassists. Don't remember the name, they weren't famous.
One bassist playing mainly slap bass.
The other played fingerstyle on either a fretted or fretless, a round tone that contrasted the slapping.


I don't really like the idea of two bassist playing togheter. Let me explain that with an analogy.
A bassist and a guitarist playing togheter is very heterosexual.
A bassist and two guitarist is an interesting trio.
Two guitarist togheter is like a lesbian relationship.
So, two bassists is like .... ;)

I'm a huge King Crimson fan and although it was a Warr guitar and stick/bass when Tony Levin and Trey Gunn would play I would count that.

Another band I saw with two bassists was the Dixie Dreggs when they opened for Dream Theater a few years ago (went to see DD only). They had Dave LaRue and Andy West both playing. Andy West was playing the 7-string during the show.

To a bass purist this probably doesn't count, but if you check out some stuff by The Cure - especially the album "Faith," Robert Smith uses a Fender BassVI along with Simon Gallup playing electric bass.
The opening track "The Holy Hour" starts with a flanged bassline on the VI which continues for the song, and then eventually Simon lays down his own line.
So, not really two bassists, but two basses.
