Two Cabs - positioning

I use 2 gk 112's in position 1
Love the fact that they are wider do putting them in position 1 gets the stack higher up for me to hear and less boomy... I hated the stock speakers (blew 2 of them) not even pushing them hard (gk mb800 fusion head never got past 12:00) so I replaced the stock drivers with 2 fatal neo 112's from avatar genz Benz stock... HUGE HUGE difference in low mids clarity and Warmer bottom end .. .. Got 2 replacement gk's under warranty and those are spares ...
 
yes, the comb-filter effect is there wherever you have two or more soundsources side-by-side.

And what about the GK 212 Cabs? The speakers are not side by side but diagonal

Not really. Just makes the cab a bit narrower for easier placement. Any improvement in comb filtering is negligible.

I wouldn't sweat a 45deg. difference from vertical. This is all interesting, and to an extent useful, but...well, I thought Bassmec's post made great fun of us dissecting peach fuzz.
 
I was watching a Deep Purple YouTube, 1972 era. Ritchie Blackmore was being his usual obsessive self and was fiddling with his twin Marshall full stacks. Those types of rigs comb and beam horribly. He kept pushing them around, and actually angled them inwards towards themselves. Could have been the first evidence of crossfiring? I never saw them arranged like that again, stage manager or roadies probably said they had to stay flat together.
 
So what about orienting the 112s on their side in the vertical stack? I have 2 GS112s and have often wondered whether stacking them sideways would be better. They'd be taller that way. But then you run into the dilemma of both speakers up? Both speakers down? Speakers aligned to the middle? Speakers aligned to the top and bottom respectively? Any insight here?
 
What should be clearly pointed out here, is that the comb filtering effect starts to occur off axis with laterally mounted twin loudspeaker setups.
That's why figure 1 suffers the least comb filtering effect, laterally across the auditorium.
The time it takes at circa 1 millisecond a foot for the ear to hear the signal from the top cab, is the same as the bottom cab wherever you stand.
However walls return echos of the original signal causing pockets of comb filtering in areas close to them.
Thus to overcome this issue it is important to only measure off axis response in rooms designed thus.

Now having connected a microphone or DI to the vertically aligned bass rig, don't under any circumstances play those signals via any other amplification system, PA ETC into the auditorium unless the cabinets are vertically aligned with the bass rig and are in coincedent phase with the output of the bass rig at all frequencies.
(It's obvious that any mixing of speakers/crossover types etc should be avoided at all costs, so a decision now has to be made by the mixing speakers Police, at this point the only option is to remove any PA support or go to comb filtering jail)

Also any spill from our bass rig into vocal or other instruments microphones placed other than exactly where the bass rig stands are liable to let the dreaded comb filtering effects into our acoustically phase aligned perfect world.
Leaving the only non comb filtering option available, a single centrally positioned mono 360 degree point source PA and no bass rig at all.

Still having a slight problem with comb filtering from the roof?, so In the absence of an anechoic chamber never play indoors or near other buildings or reflective surfaces, or allow your audience or other band mates to listen to you play, other than from a gig where the PA and audience are all suspended above the ground by cables or better still as cables have their own resonance problems, obviously highly acoustically absorbent hot air balloons in perfectly still air are the only option for not having any comb filtering at all.:)

I play regularly in a 300 year old barn. It is narrow long very tall with not wall taller than the other. I have played in numerous positions in the barn with drums, two guitars, keys & sax. The best position is across the short end of the rectangle with cabs side by side.

Travesty. Lots of watts, 1500w turned down so I play gently. Thing is the science is science. It would be not appropriate for me to follow the science without using my ears. All the mates can hear me. In other positions I'd have to crank my stuff and it made no difference. No one could hear me, I couldn't hear me.

I'm saying be open to possibilities while knowing what science says works.

Bigger stages, live, outside, I often take one cab to keep onstage volume down.
